Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy weekend, everyone! There’s not a ton of wind in the forecast this weekend, but models are hinting at quite a bit of wind for next week. For now, though… here’s Saturday: the day starts off with clear sky in the Gorge and marine clouds in Portland. A .07 gradient between the two gave us pre-dawn wind in the single digits to the teens in the western Gorge. Locations east of The Dalles are a writeoff today – they’ll end up with light easterlies at best. The western Gorge is a bit tricker; models like the idea of very light wind today. Given the gradient, clouds in the west, and offshore high, I think we’re likely to see 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River for much of the day. Mosier is a maybe, and the Lyle stretch is a “probably not”. River temp is 53 degrees. Flow is 485kcfs, a big “hell no” for the Rufus stretch of the river.

A thermal low pressure system builds over Oregon on Sunday. Clear sky on both sides of the Cascades and near-zero pressure gradient leads to calm wind. We might even see very light east wind in the afternoon. Not a good day for a wind-powered activity. Great day for road biking or paddling.

The Doldrums (in this case, a broad area of weak low pressure) arrive at the coast Sunday night into Monday. This also squashes the pressure gradient. Models suggest calm wind early, W 8-12 midday, and calm wind again Monday afternoon. Models disagree on the details for the rest of the week. That said, it does look like we’ll have a heat low in the desert and marine air in the Portland area. This will be under S or SE flow, meaning the atmosphere will be rather unstable. Generally speaking, we’re looking at gusty westerlies in the mid 20’s (at least) for Tuesday through Thursday, assuming nothing changes.

BONUS: Jones Saturday: 13-16. Sunday: 10-13. Monday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Saturday: 17-20. Sunday: 10-13 late. Sunday: 7-10. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: 15-20/15-20/25-30, west swell 8′ at 12 seconds. Sunday: no/10-15/LT S, W 7′ @ 12. Monday: light S wind everywhere, W 5′ @ 11.

Random Morning Thoughts

Anxiety is an icky-feeling thing, but it’s something we all experience. Because it feels terrible (like shame), we often try and suppress it or ignore it. Significant amounts of energy can go into avoiding anxiety. The irony of this is that leaning in to anxiety, learning to be with it, is the thing that can allow us to tolerate it without minimal distress.

We can accomplish this by spending a little time in exploration. If you’re anxious, take a few moments to write down the things you’re anxious about. As you write each one down, notice if you feel relief, heightened anxiety, or something else. And hang out with those emotions too.

See if you’re telling yourself stories about what might happen next; anxiety is the nervous system’s warning that ‘something bad is going to happen’. So, it can be helpful to check out if that’s true, or how true it is. It can also be helpful to realize that you may have some control over the things that are making you anxious. And of course, it can be helpful to talk it all through with someone. May you be at ease. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Mountain Weather Forecast

We’ll see a stretch of a few sunny days on the mountain followed by a chance of thunderstorms midweek. Saturday looks sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9000′ early and 11,000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NE 25 all day. Sunday looks sunny. The FAF will be 11,000′ early and 13,000′ in the afternoon. NE wind at 25 in the morning drops to NE 10 in the afternoon and ENE 15 overnight. Monday looks clear. The FAF will be 12,000′ and the wind will be ENE or NE 10-15 all day.

Road and Mountain Biking

I received another report yesterday via the 44 Trails website that Knebal, 8 mile, and Bottle Prairie are open. Given the fact that I also received photos of deep snow about a week ago, I’m not sure if we can trust that! I’m going to wait until Timmy T. tells me it’s open before I go. Lewis River is open from the bottom. Kitchen Sink is apparently riding quite nice. Wildflowers are out all over the place, and Post Canyon is full of shuttlers. Gentle reminder: uphill traffic has the right of way, EVEN IF YOU’RE RUNNING STRAVA! There is a race in Post Canyon next Saturday, so you’ll want to make other plans. If you volunteer as race support, you’ll be helping the HRATS earn some cash.

Upcoming Events

Today’s apparently Gorge plant sale day with sales at The Dalles City Park, Hood River’s OSU extension office, Hood River Valley High, and The Next Door in Hood River.

Other events include a group trail run in Post Canyon at 8, a road bike ride from Mountain View Cycles at 9, a trail work party at Post Canyon’s Family Man at 9:30, the last day of the season at Mt. Hood Meadows, the Cascade Chainbreaker Race in Bend, and free admission at the Gorge Interpretive Center in Stevenson. Today’s also the Carson to Stevenson Ridge Run. Cascade Locks has high school and college sailboat races all day today and tomorrow.

Tomorrow morning starts with free yoga at 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon. There’s touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 11, and there are free art classes for kids at the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River from 1-3. Looking at next weekend, Post Canyon hosts an Enduro race on Saturday.
