Gorge Wind Forecast

A couple days of east wind are on tap before we return to westerlies for a couple of days. Adding to the fun is high temps in the 85-90 degree range through Tuesday. After that, 70ish is the max for most of the extended forecast. All that still sounds good for water sports!

Sunday starts out sunny with easterlies in the 15-25 range between Rooster and Viento. The wind rises to 25mph for the whole stretch mid-morning. It’ll fall to 20mph, still plenty for many sports, early afternoon and fade a bit more to 10-15 after 2pm. River flow readings are 60-85kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 88F. It doesn’t get much better for an east wind day!

Monday looks similar: the day starts with E 10-15 at Rooster and 20-25 from Cascade Locks to Viento. The wind builds to 20-25 by mid-morning from Rooster to Viento. You’ll want to get it a little earlier, because the fade will happen quicker and more completely. By 2pm, models suggest we’ll have less than 10mph all through our normal easterly beaches. High temp: 90F.

Tuesday starts out dead calm or perhaps very light westerly. Midday wind rises to 15-18 from Stevenson to Swell and stays calm east of Swell. Hood River may join early, and it may not – models are really concentrating the wind in a narrow slice of the western Gorge. Just wait a little longer; By early afternoon, westerlies rise to 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 15-18 at Avery. At this point, it’ll still be calm out east, but that will change. The executive session rises to gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus with 19-22 at Arlington. High temp: 86F.

Wednesday looks like 22-25 east of The Dalles with highs in the low 70’s. Uncertainty increases at that point and beyond, so we’ll leave it there for now. Have a great easterly Sunday!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Thursday brings a showing of the bike movie “Reset” at River City at 8pm. The Post and Pint will shift to 5pm to accommodate this. The movie is free, and there’s a raffle to benefit the HRATS.

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

It’s still dusty and dry! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
