Sunday. Sunny, sunny, no wind play day!

DSC_3353-Edit
The wind models have been bouncing all over the place for the last few days, not really providing much certainty about the future. But then, there’s never really any certainty about the future, is there? That’s why you should eat desert first – life is uncertain! Anyway, the offshore low pressure system is still right where we left it – offshore, and will continue to impact our weather for a couple more days. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

For today, you can expect east wind at 10-15 at Rooster this morning, maybe with Stevenson joining in midday. The easterlies will pick up to 5 mph or so from Viento eastward this afternoon. In case you were curious, the river water temp is 62 degrees, flow is 185kcfs at The Dalles, and 2003 Chinook made it past Bonneville Dam yesterday.

Looking at Monday, the weather models still aren’t quite sure when the offshore low will move inland. They are currently thinking it’ll happen Monday night into Tuesday. If that actually happens, this is the scenario that will play out. We’ll see light and variable wind on Monday morning (a change from last night’s model prediction of E 20-25). By midday Monday, we’ll have west wind at 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River. By Monday afternoon, we’ll have westerlies at 23-26.

Those westerlies will likely be short-lived near Hood River (90 minutes or so), and longer lasting at Stevenson, the Rowena stretch, Avery, and possibly near the grain towers west of the Maryhill Bridge (I’m not putting any money on the direction being right for the Wall section of river tomorrow!).

That pesky offshore low should be moving east by Tuesday morning with high pressure building offshore. The GFS (our friend, the GFS) currently suggests Dawn Patrol at 20-23. After that, we should see west 24-28 or maybe a bit more from Viento to Rufus. Looking at Wednesday, models are bouncing around all over the place. It’s not that they aren’t giving a consistent picture for wind. It’s that they aren’t giving a consistent picture for the weather. That’s making it impossible to predict the wind past Tuesday.

Low pressure settles in offshore on Sunday with high pressure inland. That will leave us with very light westerlies on Sunday morning and very light easterlies on Sunday afternoon, setting you up for something other than a wind sport.

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m sitting here this morning thinking about the next four weeks of school, when I’ll be spending way more time in Portland than I’d prefer, and way less time in the woods and on the water than I’d prefer. I’m reminding myself of a couple of things this morning – the river and woods will still be there in four weeks. More importantly, as much as I love spending time in Nature, my happiness doesn’t derive from Nature. Its source is me.

We forget this sometimes. Those sports we do, the foods we eat, the money we have, the view from our house, these things just contribute to our happiness. They are not, in and of themselves, our happiness. When we rely on things outside us to generate positive moods for us, we’re building our life on shaky ground. Much like a city built on fill or sand, we put ourselves at risk for crumbling when the world starts shaking. In other words, if our happiness is based on doing/acquiring/having, our happiness disappears when those things fade away.

Some would argue that happiness can only come from within. To some extent that’s true, but I would ask you to consider your relationships as well. Our minds are built for interacting with others (google IPNB), and we can leverage that knowledge to be happier. Cultivate your inner happiness (meditate, reflect, journal, create art) and cultivate your interpersonal happiness (make friends, deepen your relationships, be vulnerable), and the foundation of your world will be more solid.

When you build an inner and interpersonal sense of joy and ease at being alive, you’ll be joyful and at ease even when all those outer things are out of reach. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

Today looks like an absolutely perfect day for a bike ride either on the trails or on the road. You’ll find excellent dirt in the woods and almost no wind on the road. There’s really nothing more to say than that other than… uphill has the right of way! If you’re wondering what’s open, most trails are open and all road rides are open.
