Mt. Hood Forecast

Clear sky Sunday morning gives way to high clouds. The snow previously forecast for tonight has completely disappeared from the forecast. We’re looking at mostly clear weather for most of the week, and then models continue to hint at snow for next weekend. Timing of the next round of precip is not yet clear, and models vary by days in their predictions.

Looking at Sunday… clear, blue sky starts the day. High clouds arrive mid-morning and deepen during the day. That’s about all that happens with those clouds. A few snow flurries are possible, but aren’t all that likely and won’t amount to enough to change the snow conditions. The free air freezing level will be 7000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ or so overnight. Wind: W 20 all day, WNW 20-25 in the afternoon and evening, and NNE 20 overnight.

Oh what a difference a day makes; instead of a snowy forecast for Monday, we’re now looking at clear sky. The FAF will be 2500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NNE 20 in the morning, WNW 20-25 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight.

Tuesday will also be sunny, but it’ll be warmer. The freezing level will be 8000′ in the morning, 8500′ in the afternoon, and 7500′ overnight. Wind: NW 10 in the morning, W 5 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight. Models predict snow sometime after Wednesday, but there’s really no clarity. Total precip predicted through the weekend varies from .75” WE to 1.5” WE, but there’s no guarantee all that will fall as snow, and there’s also no guarantee all that will stay in the forecast. In the meantime, enjoy the spring skiing!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies keep on going for several more days. A weak cold front drives Sunday’s gusty wind. Morning gradients: .09 and .03. Westerlies start variable to the teens, depending on location. By midday, they pick up to gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Avery. The wind drops to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon and holds at gusty 22-25 from Mosier to Arlington. River flow is 106kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 58F. Monday starts with 12-15 all through the Gorge as that weak front exits. Late morning wind rises to 21-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles thanks to 1033mb offshore high pressure. It’s likely the wind will climb to 24-28 from Lyle to Rufus in the afternoon. High temp forecast: 62F. Tuesday’s max wind looks like 18-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles with a high temp of 69F. Wednesday: possibly stronger westerlies. We’ll keep an eye on it!

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly clear sky turns increasingly high overcast as the day goes on and picks up some lower-level clouds in the afternoon. Temps will be near 50 early and in the upper 50’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No precip, no rainbows. Monday looks clear and chilly in the morning and warmer and sunny later. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 60’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows. Tuesday will be sunny all day. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Next chance of rain: late next week.
