Mt. Hood Forecast

Monday’s going to be another spring skiing day on the mountain, and so will Tuesday. A little bit of snow is in the forecast on Wednesday with another round of light snow possible for the weekend. Models are disagreeing on snowfall totals. Compounding the lack of clarity is the fact that the GFS is stuck at image 23 this morning. That’s halfway through Wednesday. I’m using backup models, and my interpretation of them is prone to be less accurate.

Looking at Monday, all we see is sunshine and corn snow. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 7500′ overnight. No precip. Wind: N 15 in the morning, NW 20-25 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Tuesday also looks like a sunny, spring skiing day. The free air freezing level will be 7500′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, and will start to fall towards 4000′ overnight. Wind: W 10 in the morning, W 5 in the afternoon, and W 20-25 overnight. Wednesday starts clear and turns cloudy midday. This is where the GFS stopped this morning. Other models suggest a few inches of snow in the afternoon and evening as the snow level falls from 7000′ to 1500. Next chance of snow is in the late Friday to early Sunday time period. Enjoy the sunshine and corn snow!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue… Relatively quite weather combines with strong offshore high pressure today for a solid round of fairly steady westerlies. Early gradients: .08 and .06. Early wind: teens in the usual strong places with 7-10 scattered about. We’ll see a rapid build to 23-26 from Viento to Avery by late morning or early afternoon. Stevenson will join with 20-23. Early gradients and the overall weather pattern suggest that the Maryhill stretch of the river will also be an option. You’ll find 21-24 there this afternoon. River flow is 129kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 62F.

Tuesday starts with westerlies at 14-17 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 east of there and 7-10 at Stevenson. Sunny, warm conditions in the afternoon are joined by westerlies at 19-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 7-10 to the east. High temp: 69F. Wednesday sees a cold front push into the area. That will drive stronger, gustier westerlies. The day starts with gusty 22-26 from Viento to Arlington. Drizzle will probably push in to the western Gorge, so prepare to drive. The afternoon brings gusty 27-31 from Mosier to Threemile. High temp: 57F.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s
