Mt. Hood Forecast

Partly cloudy, high overcast sky is the forecast all day today. We’ll move into a cloudier pattern on Sunday with a chance of a couple inches of snow late Sunday night into Monday daytime. After that, it’s back to sunshine for a couple of days. Models are hinting at three or four days of cooler, wetter weather from the middle of next week on through the weekend. Let’s cross our fingers that plays out and we get a return to winter!

Looking closer at Saturday, we see partial high overcast sky all day long. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ in the morning. It’ll drop to 6500′ in the afternoon and hold overnight. No precip. Wind: SW 5 in the morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and WNW 20-25 overnight. Superbowl hiking at Meadows: possible, maybe even likely.

Sunday starts out high overcast and probably sees periods of sun and clouds all day. Snow moves in afternoon midnight with a trace by sunrise Monday. The snow level will be 6500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. Wind: WNW 20-25 all day turning variable to 5mph overnight.

Monday brings light snowfall during the day and a return to clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and the free air freezing level will fall to 1000′ or less overnight. Due to the path of this incoming cold front, moisture will be limited; expect just 1-3” snow (probably the lower end of that) from this system. That falls during the day. A few flurries are possible Monday night. Wind: variable to 5mph in the morning building to W 20 in the afternoon and WNW 30-35 overnight.

Tuesday looks clear and cold in the morning and clear and above freezing in the afternoon with WNW wind at 20-30mph. Wednesday looks very similar with the addition of high clouds in the afternoon. Models hint at a transition to snowier weather after that, but there are no guarantees. The GFS and ECMWF currently both hint at a spread of 1-2” total water equivalent in the next 7-10 days. Cross your fingers and do whatever superstitious things you do to make it snow!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies continue… A variable-strength wind start on Saturday with gradients of .04/.01 leads to 10-13 this afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow is 116kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 67F. Sunday starts with 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier with 7-10 east of there to Arlington. Afternoon wind, probably after 2pm, climbs in response to an approaching cold front. As usual, that gives us gusty westerlies. Expect 22-26 or so from Stevenson to Arlington with short-lived wind between Swell and Hood River. Drive pre-emptively for the longest session! High temp: 56F. Looking at Monday, we see a light wind start, or perhaps westerlies to 5mph or so. Afternoon wind picks up in response to offshore high pressure: 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus. High temp: 60F. Tuesday looks stronger. Current forecast is 27-31, and Wednesday might hit the mid-20’s too.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s
