Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Happy spring skiing, everyone! How warm did it get on Mt. Hood on Saturday? 50 degrees at 5000′. Hopefully you had your warm-temp paste wax in your pocket. Don’t leave home without it (and sunscreen) for Sunday. Sun sticks around through at least part of Wednesday. Models keep pushing back the arrival of precip; we’re now looking at a return to snowfall perhaps next Friday. In the meantime… Sunday will be sunny. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ or so all day. Temps max out near 50. Wind will be light and variable all day. On Saturday, the snow was getting sticky by 10:30am. Combat that with warm wax. Reapply as needed. Monday: ditto, but a few degrees warmer. Tuesday: sunny all day. The free air freezing level drops from 10,000′ in the morning to 9000′ in the afternoon to 8000′ overnight. Temps max out at… 50F! Wind: SW 10-15 early, WSW 20 in the afternoon, and WSW 20 overnight. Models drag in a few high clouds on Wednesday. Temps max out near 40, and the wind will be WSW 15-25. Thursday: maybe cloudy and a bit cooler? Models currently have snow returning late Friday with 2-4” water equivalent through the end of the month. Winter. Is. Not. Over. Enjoy.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Easterlies drop in strength the next couple of days, and then we switch to westerlies for Tuesday and Wednesday. Models have been all over the place on how much wind we’ll see and where we’ll see it. Very annoying. They should just say we’ll have 24-27 from Stevenson to Hood River every single day with 29-33+ from Maryhill to Threemile. But that’s not what we get. Sunday starts with 15-20 at Iwash (Rooster) and 15 at Stevenson. The wind holds at Stevenson and drops to 10ish at Iwash. River flow Saturday was 100-149kcfs, river temp is 44.42F, and high temp forecast is 72F. Monday starts with 15 at Stevenson and Iwash. The wind holds through early afternoon at Stevenson and drops to 10 at Iwash. In the late afternoon, the wind goes calm. High temp: 75 freaking degrees and sunny. Yeah! Tuesday starts calm. The Sunday afternoon forecast for Tuesday says we’ll see a calm start with 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. The way things have been going, that’ll probably change. High temp: 72F. We currently have a forecast for Wednesday of 21-24 from Stevenson to Arlington. I like that. Let’s make sure it happens, okay? It’s probably worth mentioning that ensembles are all over the place. No promises yet, friends.

Cycling

We have reports of brown pow in Post Canyon, at least to 8-Track. Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing (or sunny) when you go to ride; freeze-thaw trails are susceptible to permanent damage. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
