SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Sunday brings another round of west wind, and then we get a rest day on Monday as the Nch’i Wana goes light and variable. This gives me a chance to take a rest day from the forecast! Up-and-down westerlies return on Tuesday in the “maybe just enough” range, 17-20mph. Another unreliable day is in the cards on Wednesday as a weather system impacts us. A bit of a cooldown Thursday nudges us back into the “windy” zone. Gorge wind forecast ensembles (aka “the Euro”) suggest strong-enough westerlies will continue into the weekend and beyond.
Sunday started clear in Hood River with marine clouds in Portland and these gradients: 30.10/30.03/30.02. Early wind was under 10mph east of The Dalles. Stevenson and Swell started at 12-15mph, and Viento (where the sensor reads high) said 21mph. By mid morning, westerlies rise to 18-22mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 14-17mph at Mosier and 10-13mph near Rowena. Afternoon brings 18-22mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-1718-22mph from Lyle to Doug’s. To the east: westerlies fade as the day goes on, and the wind eventually turns calm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 97-123kcfs, river temp is 69.4F, and high temp forecast is 89F for Hood River.
Monday brings very little wind: very light westerlies early, very light easterlies midday, calm wind in the afternoon. High temp: 91F for Hood River. Temira gets to take a day off from forecasting, yay!

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Tuesday looks a bit windier after a light start. It’s possible we’ll see a period of 16-19mph from Stevenson to the Hatch in the morning hours. West-side heating knocks the wind down below 15mph midday. Afternoon westerlies return at 14-17mph from Stevenson to Hood River and up-and-down 19-22mph from Mosier to Doug’s. Models suggest evening wind will fill in at 19-22mph from Stevenson to Avery and perhaps Rufus as well. All that said, there’s quite a bit of uncertainty in the models, and there will be instability present. That makes for a low-reliability forecast. Don’t get your heart set on river time Tuesday. High temp: 98F in Hood River.
A weak impulse (weather thingie) moving through on Wednesday will disrupt wind quality. Models hint at a decent (20-23mph) Hatch dawn patrol with a quick decline below 15mph by mid-morning. It’s possible westerlies will return at 17-20mph in the late afternoon. With all the moving parts, today is too far from Wednesday to make solid plans, especially given the presence of atmospheric instability. You will definitely want to get in the water if you can – we’re expecting hot weather and noticable humidity.
Cooler, but not cool, weather is forecast on Thursday along with a noticeable increase in the wind. Ditto on Friday. As of right now, I’ll say 24-27mph for both days. That forecast will definitely need revising given the 10 degree spread in possible high temps and potential impacts of eastern Gorge smoke on the temp gradient. All that said, ensembles generally keep the westerlies going at 20mph or more through the middle of next week along with warm temps. Sounds fun! See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! Ready for heat? ME NEITHER! But heat is coming. Hottest two days this week will be Tuesday and Wednesday, but areas from The Dalles eastward remain blazing hot through at least Thursday. Wildfire smoke enters the picture as well thanks to all those blazes sparked by last week’s thunderstorms. Smoke season is 100% here, and Washington is planning on placing tariffs on Oregon for the smoke, Oregon is placing tariffs on Washington, and Idaho, being in lockstep with the administration, is placing tariffs on Oregon, Washington, California, and Canada.
Glenwood this morning
Glenwood isn’t putting tariffs on anyone. They’re wiser and smarter than that. Instead, everyone in Glenwood is taking small steps to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Temp there this morning: 44F. Despite Glenwood’s best attempts to cool the entire planet by being the coldest spot in the Gorge each day, the planet continues to warm dramatically. Here in the Gorge, temps warm up rather impressively this afternoon. Stevenson: 87; Hood River: 89; The Dalles: 96; Pasco: 93. West wind builds to 15-20mph between Stevenson and Mosier with 10-15mph east of Mosier to The Dalles. Wind will be light farther east.
Monday’s Gorge weather forecast
Monday starts warm and cloudy with temps mostly 60+ degrees and west wind under 10mph. Areas west of The Dalles eventually clear. Clouds stick around east of The Dalles. This makes the temp forecast a bit tricky. As of now, we have 90/91/96/94. Wind will be light and variable all day. Thanks to light south wind aloft and the light/variable wind at the surface, smoke from the fires south of the Nch’i Wana is likely to drift north and impact air quality and sky clarity especially east of The Dalles.
Tuesday’s Gorge weather forecast
Looking at Tuesday… we start mostly clear, but increasing humidity leads to a warm (60-70 degree), sticky (MUGGY) daybreak. Smoke will be present early, especially east of Biggs and in the south parts of Wasco, Sherman, and Gilliam counties. Afternoon will be hot and sticky like those cinnamon rolls at Cousins, yum. High temps: 95 in Stevenson, 98 in Hood River, 104 in The Dalles, and 101 in Pasco. HOT! We start the day with very light west wind. It bounces around during the day and finishes with 15-20mph between Stevenson and The Dalles with light wind east of The Dalles. Wednesday looks nearly as hot… well, okay, there’s a lot of range in the temp forecast, but it’ll still be hot, just as muggy, and equally breezy.
Extended Gorge weather forecast
A cooling (and drying, LESS MUGGY!) trend steps to the plate on Thursday and slowly drags temps downward into the middle of next week. Highs never drop below 80 for most of us, but at least it won’t be 100+. With the cooler weather comes stronger wind and increased fire danger. With the return of westerlies, air quality will improve for those of us not due east of the zillions of fires burning out of control. Tariffs, folks. Those will fix this problem. I’m levying some against all y’all just to get in on this game! Safe travels. -TATAS
