Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

We’re still on track for ridiculous snowfall on Sunday and really wonderful skiing conditions next week. For Saturday, we’ll have a snowy and windy powder day. The snow level will be 500′ early and 1000′ in the afternoon. About .7” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 8-9” of powder. Another .2” falls overnight, for 2-3” of powder. Wind Saturday will be NW 40 all day, rising to W 50 after midnight.

Sunday looks super-duper snowy and stormily windy. Given the extreme snowfall rate and wind, you can expect blizzard conditions both on the road and on the mountain. Expect zero visibility at times on Highway 26 and 35. If you are going to a ski resort on Sunday, take a snow shovel or you will not be able to get your car out of the parking lot. No, seriously. The current forecast has the snow level at 1000′ all day (I think it may bump up higher mid-morning) and 0′ overnight. About 2” water value, yes, two inches, falls between 4am and 4pm. Given the cold temps, that works out to two feet of new snow. Just another inch or two will fall after 4pm. Wind could be problematic: W 50 through noon is possibly strong enough for a partial shutdown of the resorts. Evening wind backs off to W 40 and slowly falls to NW 15-20 after midnight. Whoa.

Monday starts off with a few flurries and then turns clear. The free air freezing level will be 0′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. Just an inch of snow will fall in the morning (if that). Wind will be NW 15-20 or so all day.

Tuesday starts off with high clouds and quickly turns snowy. The snow level will be 500′ early and 1500′ later. A few inches of snow fall during the day with W/NW wind at 30ish. Next round of heavy snowfall looks like Wednesday night.

Random Morning Thoughts

My brain is too groggy this morning for reflections. I hope you have a wonderful rainy day or snowy day if you’re on the mountain! May you be well.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Saturday, we’ll start with light and variable wind. As a weather system moves through, the wind will pick up to very gusty 24-29 through the entire Gorge from mid-morning on. Sunday looks like gusty 24-30 pretty much all day with the exception of the Viento to Mosier stretch. That section of river will take a few hours to catch up. Monday looks like light west wind early and 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon. River temps is 37 degrees.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It seems to be a mix of snow and rain this morning. We’ll see a switch to sprinkles below 1000′ by midday. Temps will be right around freezing early and in the low 40’s this afternoon. Strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks very rainy until 4pm with showers after that. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon. Strong afternoon westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Temps drop below freezing Sunday night for an icy start to Monday. We may see up to 1” of snow Sunday night. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and low 40’s Monday afternoon. Light westerlies. 4% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Well, so much for mountain biking season! Everything is covered in snow and will likely stay that way through next week. If you have a fat bike, this is your time to try it out. But please, don’t ride in exposed areas – freeze-thaw cycles will make the trails delicate and susceptible to damage.

Upcoming Events

There’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am today and the Cold Lap mixed surface ride at Dirty Fingers at 3pm. On Sunday, there’s by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 9am, ping pong at the Armory at 10am, meditation at Flow at 11am, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Waterfront Park at 11am, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm, and restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6pm.
