GORGE WIND FORECAST
If you’re still seeing yesterday’s and it’s after 9am, try opening this in an incognito window AND/OR FLUSHING YOUR CACHE or do a do a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R)

Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! I hope you had an amazing time on the Nch’i’ Wana while I was on retreat. I threw out my back last time I was out there with you, so I won’t be joining you any time soon. But when I do, look out. Given my inability to sit/stand, I might have to play around with the format of this forecast a bit for a little while. Anyhow… Looks like there’s a fair bit of wind in the future. Biggest days, for those of you for whom size matters, look like today (Tuesday) and the Friday-Saturday window when a weather system moves in. This isn’t quite The Cooldown You Were Looking For โ there’s a possibility of the strong wind coming in overnight.
This morning (Tuesday) started with pressures of 30.13/30.01/29.97 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.04. We should (eventually) see wind all the way to Rufus today. By mid-morning, you’ll find 24-27
from Viento to Hood River with Stevenson slowly building. Hood River to Mosier climbs to 20-23mph with 14-17mph east of Mosier to Arlington. A period of 26-29mph is possible, but not promised, between Viento and the Hatch.
Midday, westerlies dip (midday lull!) to 23-26mph near the Hatch and fill in all the way from Stevenson to Rufus. Afternoon brings less wind to the west and more to the east: 26-29mph from Lyle to Rufus with a slow slide to 19-22mph between Stevenson and Mosier. After 5pm, areas east of Mosier fall to 22-25mph. River flow over the last 24 hours was 99-140kcfs, river temp is 71.6F (poor salmon), and high temp forecast is 84 in Hood River and low 90s in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Westerly breezes continue on Wednesday, but they won’t be quite as strong. TJ and Eddy’s dawn patrol looks like 18-21mph from Viento to Hood River with a quick built to 21-24mph from Stevenson to Mosier. Clearing sky in Portland leads to a midday lull โ 17-20mph. In the afternoon, we’ll have a slight surge: 19-22mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17mph near Rowena. High temp: 86F in Hood River.
Hotter weather arrives on Thursday and knocks down the wind. Well have 17-20mph early from Viento to the Hatch, but the wind quickly drops to 11-14mph. Afternoon: 14-17mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13mph at Rowena. High temp: 90 in Hood River.
Now we turn our attention to the Friday-Saturday periods: an approaching trough/front combo (cooler air, clouds) leads to increasing cross-Cascade gradients as Friday progresses. As of this morning, models have the strongest wind after 5pm and into the night with moderately strong westerlies continuing into Saturday. While the strongest wind is likely to be late, daytime wind should be 20+mph, perhaps 25+. We’ll watch this closely! Quite a bit of uncertainty is present on Sunday, but it’s almost certain to be quite a bit lighter. That’s it for now. Have fun out there, and get some for me โ it’s gonna be a while before I can join you!

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! I missed you people! I missed the Gorge. I’m back, but I’m pretty broken right now โ threw out my back which makes it damned hard to forecast (can’t sit, can’t stand). Fortunately the weather is going to be pretty friendly through much of the week. Hopefully there aren’t any ICE storms โ Hood River was hit by one last Wednesday, and the agents were actively approaching legal observers and harassing them. Before we get too into the weather today, there’s an exciting announcement in healthcare world…
Columbia Gorge Family Medicine now has what I can the Swizzle Stick as an alternative to a traditional PAP smear. If you have a vag*na, are 30+, and have always had normal PAP results, this self-administered test is for YOU! Other healthcare offices may have it, but I was at CGFM yesterday and they told me about it. YAY!
On to the weather outside the moistest place on the human body…. Today, Tuesday, will be warm and windy and sunny. We do have a Red Flag Warning posted (again) for many areas. West wind builds to 25-30mph between Stevenson and Rufus today with 20-25mph at Stevenson. Highs range from 84 in Hood River to 91 in The Dalles, and 95 in Pasco.
Wednesday brings a few low clouds west of Wyeth, but the rest of us will be mostly clear all day. Exception: a few high clouds east of The Dalles. Morning temps: 60ish. Afternoon: 86 in Hood River and 92 from The Dalles to the east. Wind will be 15-20mph pretty much all day west of Mosier with 15-20mph near Rowena in the afternoon and light wind est of The Dalles.
Hotter weather on Thursday accompanies clear sky. Morning: 60 degrees or so. Afternoon: 90-97, hottest near The Dalles. Wind will be 15-20mph west of Mosier in the morning with 15mph between Stevenson and Mosier in the afternoon.
More interesting weather arrives in the Friday-Saturday window as an unseasonably strong weather system swings through. We’ll see strong to very strong west wind and extremely high fire danger. High temps start falling on Friday and really dip on Saturday, when Hood River will top out around 75 degrees.
That’s enough for now โ with my back so bad right now, I don’t have the energy or pain tolerance to dive in deeper than that. Hopefully I’m feeling well enough by Thursday to really dig in to the Friday-Sunday forecast. Have an awesome day today, peeps. Safe travels. -TATAS
