Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! West wind continues today, as does the brokenness of your forecaster! I’ll keep doing my best for you, but this back pain stuff is really keeping from doing my best work. Sad! We’ll have solid westerlies today, moderate westerlies Thursday, and more exciting weather (and unreliable wind) thanks to atmospheric instability on Friday. Saturday’s looking like a nuker all through the Gorge, and Sunday’s almost certainly going to outperform the lackluster models with a solid Corridor (Viento to Hood River) day.
Wednesday started with pressures of 30.07/29.97/29.94 for gradients of 0.10/0.03. A bit of a weather widget is passing through – high clouds are the indicator. We’ll see westerlies build to up and down 20-23mph this morning from Viento to Hood River. Afternoon wind falls to 18-21mph from Stevenson to Avery and builds to 14-17mph at Rufus. River flow over the last 24 hours was 100-154kcfs, river temp is 71.6F, and highs are 86 for Hood River and 93 from The Dalles eastward.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Thursday looks a bit less windy thanks to increased warmth. Early wind will be 19-22mph from Viento to the Hatch with 13-16mph near Hood River and less to the east. Midday: 17-20mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17mph from Lyle to Doug’s. Afternoon wind fills in at 17-20mph from Stevenson to Avery with 11-14mph at Rufus. Highs: 91 in Hood River and 98 in The Dalles.
Friday looks potentially exciting in terms of weather – a wave moving through in the afternoon may set off thunderstorms combined with a short period of strong, gusty, unreliable wind. For the morning, we’ll have just 11-14mph from Viento to Hood River. This wind eventually fills in from Stevenson to Mosier. After 2pm, this weather system arrives. A brief period of stronger (20-25mph ish), gusty wind is possible. This will quickly move from the western launches to the eastern launches with 60-90 minutes of decent wind at each location. Unfortunately, there a good chance this will be accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, so be careful! Highs: 88 in Hood River and 98 out east.
This system moves through Friday night and allows cooler air and clouds to penetrate the west side Saturday. Everywhere east of the low clouds should see 30-35mph west wind on Saturday. Strongest, steadiest conditions are likely to be between Lyle and Arlington or Threemile. Highs: 75 in Hood River, 80 in The Dalles, and 90 in the desert. While models aren’t excited about Sunday, the setup is one that models tend to underestimate, especially several days in advance. We’re likely to see a decent day in the Corridor – Viento to Hood River. Beyond that: westerlies likely continue thanks to seasonable temps and onshore flow. Have fun out there, everyone. Good morning, neighbors! Not much happens the next couple of days. But things might get exciting on Friday: an unseasonably strong weather system pushes inland with a chance of thunderstorms, strong wind, and even a trace of rain (maybe). Once that disruption exits stage east, we’re left with a cool, windy Saturday and a seasonable, breezy Sunday. Models have lots of uncertainty beyond that, but generally speaking temps looks seasonable with no sign of extreme heat or significant rain.
Looking at Wednesday… another typical Gorge summer day is on tap: breezy and warm. Glenwood kicked off Hump Day with a low of 46 degrees, Gimme some of that! It’s hot in my house! Temps build to the mid 80s in Hood River and low 90s from The Dalles eastward. West wind builds to 20-25mph this morning between Stevenson and Mosier. Afternoon: 20mph from Stevenson to Avery with 15-20mph at Rufus and light wind to the east.
Hotter weather is forecast on Thursday – everyone in the lowlands will be above 90. After a 55-65 degree start, we have the following highs: 91 in Hood River, 98 in The Dalles, and 96 in Pasco. West wind continues: 15-10mph from Viento to Hood River early with 15-20mph from Stevenson to Avery and 15mph near Rufus in the afternoon.
Friday looks way more interesting. It starts warm and muggy: 60-70 degrees with high clouds. A system slated for the afternoon brings vertical and directional wind shear aloft and triggers instability. Elevated thunderstorms are possible after pm. These sorts of storms tend to bring lots of lightning and little rain – NOT what we need. High temps: 88 in Hod River, 98 in The Dalles, and 96 in Pasco. Westerlies will be 15mph from Stevenson to Hood River in the morning. As this system arrives in the afternoon, the wind jumps, and it continues to build overnight.
Fire danger will be extreme on Saturday – while temps will be down (highs of 75 in the west and 92 in the desert), we’ll have west wind at 30-35mph all through the Gorge. Be careful out there. The wind calms down some on Sunday, and temps level out at 80-85 degrees all the way out to Pasco. Beyond that: seasonable weather and no chance of significant rain. Safe travels. -TATAS.
