Mt. Hood Forecast

Today’s surface conditions on the mountain will hold for the next week or so. There’s not much snow in the forecast, and we’re looking at alternating periods of sun and flurries. That’s the weather for today too. Light snowfall this morning gives way to sunshine this afternoon and clouds after midnight. The snow level will be 1500′ early and will rise to 2000′-2500′ this afternoon. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for an inch of new. Another 0.5” is forecast overnight, for a trace of new. Wind: SW 20-35 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SE 10-15 overnight.

Monday starts cloudy and stays that way with light snowfall all day. The snow level will be 2000′-2500′ during the day and will fall to 1500′ overnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast during the day for 1” new snow. Same overnight. Wind: SE 10-15 in the morning, variable to 5 in the afternoon, and SW 5-15 overnight.

Tuesday starts cloudy with flurries and ends partly cloudy. Clear sky arrives overnight. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ early and 3500-4000′ in the afternoon. Just a trace of snow falls. Wind: S of various sorts to 15mph. Wednesday and Thursday looks sunny. Models suggest a return to light snowfall this weekend. Remember that Meadows is running a Nordic Strava race. That started yesterday. It’s part of a season-long series intended to make you sweat and get fit. Have fun!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Strava reports suggest that lower Post Canyon, Hospital Hill, and Syncline are all in excellent shape. That gives you the option to check out Nestor Peak and Whoopdee as well – Douglas Johnson did some amazing work out there creating a new, improved Whoopdee. Remember: if it was below freezing last night and above freezing now, don’t ride trails exposed to the open air. They’ll be freeze-thaw and delicate, and you’ll destroy the tread. If you accidently do ride in those conditions, consider making a commitment to 20 hours of trail work this spring to make up for the damage.
