Mt. Hood Forecast

Cool temps stick around all week long, giving you lots of chances to carve the groom, hit the parks, and get your Nordic on. Mixed in with that cool weather will be periods of light snowfall, perhaps just enough to give the groom quality a different feel.

Looking at Monday, we see a partly cloudy start. Light snowfall quickly moves in. Models aren’t clear on exact amounts, and given the overall setup, reality is likely to underperform. The snow level will be 1500′-2000′ in the morning, 2500′ midday, and 1500-2000′ overnight. About 0.2”-0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, for 2-3” new snow. Another 0.1”-0.4” WE is forecast overnight, for 1-4” (likely the lower end). Wind: E 15 in the morning, light and variable in the afternoon, and WSW 15-20 overnight.

Tuesday starts with light snowfall. Intermittent snowfall continues all day, again likely under-performing model predictions. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. About 0.1-0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for 1-2” new. Another 0.1-0.4” is forecast overnight, for 1-4”. Wind: SW 10-15 in the morning, SE 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 after midnight.

Wednesday looks partly cloudy to start with clear sky in the afternoon. Some convective flurries are possible but not guaranteed. If they do set up, snow amounts will be highly variable based on location, and cannot be predicted. Nothing more than a few inches is possible. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. Wind: NW 10-15 all day and all night.

Thursday looks sunny and cool with a max freezing level of 4000′ or so. Friday looks sunny and warmer with temps climbing just above freezing at 5000′. Saturday: probably warm and sunny. Sunday: probably snowy and windy. Get up there and carve it up! And don’t forget that there’s a Nordic Strava race happening at Meadows.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Strava reports suggest that lower Post Canyon, Hospital Hill, and Syncline are all in excellent shape. That gives you the option to check out Nestor Peak and Whoopdee as well – Douglas Johnson did some amazing work out there creating a new, improved Whoopdee. Remember: if it was below freezing last night and above freezing now, don’t ride trails exposed to the open air. They’ll be freeze-thaw and delicate, and you’ll destroy the tread. If you accidently do ride in those conditions, consider making a commitment to 20 hours of trail work this spring to make up for the damage.
