Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s exactly zero wind in Hood River right now, and that’s all that will happen in this cute little hamlet until mid-morning on Monday. There are, however, other places where you can find wind on Sunday. Westerlies return Monday afternoon and (mostly) stick around for a while.

Your best bet on Sunday is to head to the western Gorge for easterlies. Rooster starts at 30mph, Stevenson starts at 20mph, and Viento starts at 15ish (the sensor reads high). The wind speed will follow a slow and steady trajectory downward. By early afternoon Rooster will be at 15mph, and Viento/Stevenson will be in the 10ish range. Hood River; calm all day. East of Lyle: easterlies at 5-10mph in the afternoon. River flow is 308-393kcfs, river temp is 59F, and high temp forecast is somewhere in the mid to upper 90’s. Go swimming!

Monday starts off dead calm all through the Gorge with the heat low over the Gorge and desert. A wee little low along the coast drives cooler air into the western half of the state in the afternoon. This is not an ideal way to come out of a heat wave; for reliable westerlies, we’d like offshore high pressure. Anyway, models are insistent that strong thermal gradients will develop across the Gorge in the afternoon. Given that this is a localized event without synoptic scale support, expect the wind to underperform models and also to be rather unreliable. Add in atmospheric instability for yet another detrimental factor. So. Midday wind picks up to 12-15 or so from Stevenson to Mosier. Models like the idea of a burst of 26-30 in the afternoon and evening, but that’s likely overdone. More likely: 21-24 or a bit stronger from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon with 10-13 out east. It’s worth noting that models are predicting max gusts between 20mph and 40mph. In other words… lots of uncertainty. High temp: nearing 100 and muggy.

Tuesday brings offshore high pressure off Oregon with a low near Vancouver Island. The low helps deepen the marine layer over the western half of the region. High temps fall about 20 degrees from Monday. The setup isn’t ideal, but it’s good enough. Morning: 12-15 in the west and 15-18 out east. Afternoon: 24-27+ from Lyle to Arlington with 17-21 in the western Gorge. Generally speaking, most of next week looks windy. Enjoy!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Coming up this weekend, there’s the Adventure Van Expo both days at the Hood River Fairgrounds. Gorge Pride takes place in The Dalles on Sunday from 9am to 6pm at Ft. Dalles Memorial Park.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! All the 44 Road trails are open. Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open, but Ape Canyon trail has received no maintenance this year. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
