Gorge Wind Forecast

Today marks the last day of this first heat wave of the season. Westerlies return this evening and stick around, with the possible exception of Thursday, through next weekend.

Monday starts out nearly calm most places with easterlies in the 10-15mph range at Viento and Rooster. Stevenson may join a for a bit before the wind goes calm all through the Gorge mid to late morning. Westerlies return in the afternoon, but the setup is far from ideal. With low pressure offshore and hot weather all across the land, we’re counting on the offshore low pushing marginally cooler air into the Willamette Valley this afternoon. That’s a big maybe. Without large-scale support, the wind field will be localized and will likely underperform. Best guess is that the wind will switch directions early to mid afternoon with 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell by 2pm or 3pm. Later in the afternoon, models suggest that slightly cooler air will filter into the west side. It’s probably best to be conservative about our hopes for the afternoon. Perhaps 15-18 from Mosier to Celilo with 11-14 between Stevenson and Mosier. Models hint that 21-24 is possible, but that’s a low probability scenario given the overall setup. River flow is 313-411kcfs, river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast is 96F.

Marine air surges inland Monday night into Tuesday morning and a low moves towards BC. Cooler air actually pushes too far inland for our typical giant cooldown day in the corridor. The day starts with 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River with 7-10 near Lyle and 20-24 from The Dalles to Boardman. Midday wind will be 11-14 at Stevenson, 21-25 from Viento to Rufus, and 18-21 east of Rufus. Models suggest the wind will focus on the Lyle to Arlington stretch in the afternoon with 25-29 and perhaps a period of 29-33 between Rowena and Rufus. West of there: 15-18. High temp: 76F.

Models build the offshore high pressure on Wednesday and give us an average Gorge day. The wind starts with 12-15 everywhere. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 22-25 from Viento to Doug’s with a bit less to the east and west. Models hint at a light wind day on Thursday and moderate westerlies on Friday. Despite the weekend being far away, most members of the ensembles are calling for strong westerlies on Saturday and Sunday. Fingers crossed. Have a great week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! All the 44 Road trails are open. Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open, but Ape Canyon trail has received no maintenance this year. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
