Gorge Wind Forecast

High pressure is settling in over the inland Northwest, and a heat low is making its way up the coast. The wind has already turned easterly, and it’ll stay that way through Sunday evening. Westerlies return on Monday. It won’t be quite the ideal cooldown, but we will be on track for westerlies from Monday afternoon on through next week.

Let’s look at Saturday. It’s perfectly glassy in Hood River. If water skiing were still a thing, people would be out there doing it! If you’d like wind, you have two choices: head to the stretch between Rooster and Viento for easterlies at 20-25 through early to mid-afternoon. You can hang out east of Viento and wait until the afternoon: easterlies pick up to 10ish along the Columbia (perhaps even 15) from early afternoon on through the evening. Late in the day, Rooster drops to 15-20, and Stevenson and Viento drop to 10-15. River flow is 346-402kcfs, river temp is 59F, and high temp forecast is 88F.

Sunday starts with 20-25 between Rooster and Viento with calm wind east of Swell. Hood River stays calm all day. In the afternoon, easterlies drop to 10-15 between Rooster and Viento and pick up to 5-10 east of Rowena. High temp forecast: 94F.

Monday starts calm all through the Gorge. A weather system in the afternoon may give us a short burst of moderate to strong westerlies, but it’s certainly not a reliable setup, especially given the potential for atmospheric instability. So… call it 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River early afternoon. Later in the day, we could see a short burst of gusty mid-20’s that starts in the central Gorge and shifts out east. No promises. High temp: upper 90’s. Temps return to normal on Tuesday and drive westerlies in the mid 20’s. The latest GFS has the westerlies sticking around in some form all next week.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Coming up this weekend, there’s the Adventure Van Expo both days at the Hood River Fairgrounds. Gorge Pride takes place in The Dalles on Sunday from 9am to 6pm at Ft. Dalles Memorial Park. There is a work party on 8 Mile trail today. Meet at Little John Snopark at 9am.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! All the 44 Road trails are open. Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open, but Ape Canyon trail has received no maintenance this year. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
