Sunday. Happy summer solstice!

sunsetblog
The river is not glassy this morning, but it’s also not whitecapping. Apparently you no longer need whitecaps for windsports. This, well, I find this amazing. Foilboarding is cool. Anyway, I’m rambling. Our Sunday morning gradients are .04 (pdx-dls), E .02 (dls-psc) and .40 (eph-dls). That should give us westerlies at 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier by late morning. As a trough moves onshore this afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to 20-23 after 2pm from Stevenson out to The Dalles, possibly out to Rufus later. Expect gusty wind from this situation, with only 90 minutes or so of the stronger wind at Swell, HR and Mosier before the wind drops to gusty 14-17 in those locations. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

After that trough moves through tonight, we’ll be left with gusty 13-16 from Swell to Arlington tomorrow morning. As another trough approaches and that first trough continues moving east, we’ll see gusty afternoon westerlies at 24-27 from Swell to Arlington.

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

My thoughts are pretty random this morning, and don’t seem to contain much insight. I’m tired from riding 12 Hours of Post yesterday. So, let’s talk about last night’s sunset. Did you see it? It was amazing. I did my best to capture it in megapixels for you, but there’s nothing like staring at the sky in awe as the colors change.

We spend an awful lot of time taking photos these days, trying to capture images of fleeting moments. I don’t have a judgment about this, just a wondering: sometimes it’s just nice to stand and watch the color of the sky change without trying to capture it. I was taking photos last night, but they don’t capture my awe and amazement. I wonder if standing in awe and amazement would burn those feelings into my mind and make them easier to recall.

Next time the sunset is as amazing as last night’s, I’m just gonna stand there and watch and be amazed. My camera will stay in my pocket. Want to try it with me, just for fun?

Gorge Weather Forecast

An offshore low has sent high clouds our way, and shall continue to do so today. With the clouds, temps will be down a touch from yesterday. Expect upper 50’s this morning and low 80’s this afternoon. Increasing wind, no rainbows.

Tomorrow looks sunny early with high clouds later. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, stronger wind later, no rainbows. Tuesday looks sunny with marine clouds in the western Gorge. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon.

Models are hinting at temps in the 90’s next weekend. Possibly the 100’s, but the models are backing off on the predictions of extreme heat. Thank goodness.

Road and Mountain Biking

Well, if the trails in Post Canyon weren’t blow out before yesterday, they are today. Most of them, anyway. If you have any pull with the weather gods, you’ll make it rain. In road bike news, this morning should be lovely, with light wind through early afternoon.

Remember, regulated use closure has begun, so dirt bikes are OK in Post Canyon but nowhere else on Hood River County Land. And you, yes you, if you are driving on forest roads, you need to carry a shovel and a gallon of water or a fire extinguisher.

You’ve been in the river all day playing like a fish. You’re hungry. You want sushi. Hit up Sushi Okalani’s happy hour, Mon-Fri 5-6pm, and Sunday 5pm-9:30. You’ll find $5 rolls, specials on sake and beer, and edamame. You’ll also find a new chef who’s serving up specials like Korean brisket & seared scallops with a ginger-cream sauce and avo-wasabi puree. You can get sushi to go, and you can get to-go sake with that sushi. No open container law in HR means you can have a sushi-sake picnic. Yay!

Upcoming Events

The Enduro race continues in Post Canyon today, with 200-something riders bombing downhill on Mitchell Ridge and Locals Only. Good for watching. Dirty Fingers was planning a heckle party on the Mitchell Ridge berms, but that’s now canceled.

Other events today include the four Sunday community yoga classes, all free or by donation. At 9am, there’s a class at Crossfit Hood River and one at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 4pm, there’s YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and at 6pm, there’s a class at Root Down in Hood River.

At 3 this afternoon, there’s rugby at the Mosier school, at 5:15 there’s a casual bike ride from Mountain View Cycles, and at 5:30, there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory.

Today is also Asit Rathod’s annual summer solstice party at Illumination Saddle on Mt. Hood. Go ski on the glacier, catch last chair up, and then hike over. Party runs from 2pm to approximately 11pm. Bring food and drinks. No guns this year, please.

The last weekend in June is the CGWA beach bash, and they need volunteers. If the following appeals to you, click here to sign up to help. On Thursday night, it’s the Pray for Wind dinner at Stonehedge. Friday is a high wind demo and a concert. There’s a beach party Saturday, and Sunday is a swap meet followed by a bbq. You can get more info and hit the Facebook join button.

Have an awesome day today!
