Friday / Saturday forecast. You can blame 12 Hours of Post.

DSC_9287-Edit-Edit
There’s a solid layer of marine clouds west of Hood River this morning. Those fluffy balls of moisture are the remnants of a weather system that crossed the Cascades early this morning. That leaves us in a good position for thermal support for the wind today. However, the offshore high pressure is weak, so we don’t have any synoptic-scale support for the wind; gradients this morning are .09 (pdx-dls), .07 (dls-psc), and .07 (eph-dls). All that aside, you’ll be on the water today. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge, Coast, Sauvie’s, Jones Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect westerlies at 16-19 pretty much everywhere this morning with mid 20’s at Maryhill and upper 20’s at Arlington. Driving out there is probably not the right call today, as models show the wind backing off east of Celilo by midday. If you’re looking for 16-19, head anywhere from Swell to Celilo this morning. If you’d like stronger wind, wait for the afternoon, when we’ll have gusty 22-25 from Swell City to Doug’s. Now… models are saying there won’t be any wind at the Maryhill stretch this afternoon. Given the gradients and depth of cloud coverage this morning, I suspect they’re wrong. I suspect you’ll find 22-25 out there too this afternoon, but you’re relying on faith and gut instinct, rather than scientific forecasting.

Jones and Sauvie’s Beta Test Forecast… Jones, 18-22. Sauvie’s 12-15. Tomorrow’s BONUS beta test forecast: Jones, 15-18. Sauvie’s: 14-17.

Tomorrow sees high pressure build inland, and that will knock down the gradients and wind speeds in the Gorge. Expect westerlies at 10-13 in the morning from Swell to Mosier, picking up to 15-18 after noon from Stevenson to Doug’s.

Sunday starts with light E wind, picks up to E 15-18 at Rooster and Stevenson mid-morning, fades by mid-afternoon, and switches to W 13-16 after 5pm. You can expect 26-30+ on Monday and Tuesday. The Gorge loves the weekday warriors this year!

Out on the coast, you’ll find (north/central/south): 5-10/10-15/15-25, SW swell 2′ @ 13 seconds. Tomorrow: 20/20-25/30-35, SW 2′ @ 12. Sunday: 10-15/5-10/10-15, SW 2 @ 12.

Random Morning Thoughts

I want to give you a heads up that I won’t be sending out a forecast tomorrow morning. You see, I have this annual event that I do. It’s called 12 Hours of Post. Riding a bike from 7am to 7pm makes it quite difficult for me to get out a forecast in the morning, so I’m taking tomorrow off.

Now I’d like to talk about my personal growth journey in terms of 12 Hours of Post.

The first year I did it, I said to myself, “I hate myself and I’m miserable, and I’m going to make myself do this race solo.” The next year I said to myself, “Well, I did it solo last year, and I guess I should defend my title. Plus, everyone expects me to do it solo again this year, so I guess I’ll do it even though I’m not really trained or tapered.” This year I said to myself, “I want the T-shirt, so I’ll do it, and if I don’t feel like riding all 12 hours, I won’t.”

One of our society’s core beliefs seems to be, “People don’t change.” I assure you that is false. People can and do change. You are capable of dramatic change, and so are the people you currently despise and distrust. Believe in yourself. Believe in others. We can all be better, and we can make our world a better place.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I see clouds! Yes, there are little fluffy low clouds outside my window this morning, and I read that it rained on the coast last night. Exciting stuff. Expect a mostly clear day today with temps in the low 60’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks sunny and warmer. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks warm and sunny with temps in the mid 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I did the Post n’ Pint shuttle last night, and holy moly are the upper trails in Post blown out. If you have any pull with Mother Nature, please ask her for a week of rain after the Enduro race this weekend. In road biking news, Sunday looks like a stellar day for a long road bike ride.

In other news, the Oregon Enduro Series is racing Post Canyon this weekend, and so is 12 Hours of Post. The other local trails will be vacant, so you may want to go elsewhere to ride. When you are done with your Saturday, head to Dirty Fingers for their anniversary party.

Remember, regulated use closure has begun, so dirt bikes are OK in Post Canyon but nowhere else on Hood River County Land. And you, yes you, if you are driving on forest roads, you need to carry a shovel and a gallon of water or a fire extinguisher.

You’ve been in the river all day playing like a fish. You’re hungry. You want sushi. Hit up Sushi Okalani’s happy hour, Mon-Fri 5-6pm, and Sunday 5pm-9:30. You’ll find $5 rolls, specials on sake and beer, and edamame. You’ll also find a new chef who’s serving up specials like Korean brisket & seared scallops with a ginger-cream sauce and avo-wasabi puree. You can get sushi to go, and you can get to-go sake with that sushi. No open container law in HR means you can have a sushi-sake picnic. Yay!

Upcoming Events

Tomorrow is the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon, benefiting the White Salmon high school cross country team. Suggested donation is $20. Tomorrow’s also the Wheatacres Ranch Trail Challenge for equestrians. That’s in Wasco, and I think it’s $14. Mountain Bikers have the Oregon Enduro Series in Post Canyon this weekend, the 12 Hours of Post event, and on Saturday evening, the Dirty Fingers anniversary party with the theme “Black Tie, Leather and/or Toga”.

Also Saturday, it’s opening day of sailboat racing season in Cascade Locks with free sailboat rides from 11am to 4pm along with racing and bbq.

Weekly events this weekend include, on Saturday, an 8am trail run in Post Canyon, a women’s group ride leaving Mt. View Cycles at 9am, and pickleball at Westside Elementary at 9:30am. On Sunday, there are four community yoga classes: 9am at Crossfit and Yoga Samadhi, 4pm Christian-themed yoga at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Root Down. There’s also pickup touch rugby at 3pm Sunday in mosier, ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, and a casual shop ride (probably road biking) at Mt. View cycles at 5:15.

The last weekend in June is the CGWA beach bash, and they need volunteers. If the following appeals to you, click here to sign up to help. On Thursday night, it’s the Pray for Wind dinner at Stonehedge. Friday is a high wind demo and a concert. There’s a beach party Saturday, and Sunday is a swap meet followed by a bbq. You can get more info and hit the Facebook join button.

Have an awesome day today!
