Sunday. Another amazing day in the Gorge. #SuckFactorZero

DSC_4955-Edit-Edit
I have to say that I was doubting the models’ insistence that today would be an east wind day. I considered going against the models (again) and calling for westerlies today. But here we are, 7am, with an easterly gradient of .02 (pdx-dls). Mother Nature has spoken, and she’s in concordance with the models. East wind it is. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Coast Wind Forecast (when I remember).

Expect light wind from Viento to Arlington this morning, picking up to 5-10 out of the east this afternoon. The models say Rooster will see 15-18 out of the east today and Stevenson will see 12-15. If you are desperate today, Jones Beach should see 20-23, and if you are in Portland, it should be windy at Sauvie’s (there ya go – my first attempt to forecast Sauvie’s ever!) The river water temp, much like the air temp, is 66 degrees, well above normal for this time of year.

We’ll see another round of east wind tomorrow as a ridge of high pressure sits over the Northwest. Expect 13-16 at Stevenson midday – that’ll be the peak of the wind speeds – with a brief period of 20-23 at Rooster Rock. The wind will fade by early afternoon and switch to westerly sometime after 5pm, increasing overnight.

Tuesday morning Dawn Patrol looks lovely with 25-29 from Swell to Mosier, with low 20’s possible at Rowena and Doug’s (no promises on the near east – promises only apply to the Corridor). With nothing moving around in the atmosphere on Tuesday, we should see reliable 28-32 for much of the day.

Wednesday maxes out at 26-30 and Thursday looks the same, possibly a touch stronger. That’d be another SuckFactor Zero week in the Gorge!

Out on the coast, the Pistol River Wave Bash continues with epic conditions. Expect this today (north/central/south): 15-20/20-25/35-40, NW 6′ @ 8 seconds. Monday: 5-10/5-10/20-25, NW 6′ @ 7. Tuesday: 10-15/15-20+/30-40, NW 5 @ 7.

Random Morning Thoughts

Like many of you, I have a job. I also do volunteer work for several organizations. Some of my volunteer work I do because it brings me as much joy as anything else (that’d be mediation, in case you are wondering), and I do the other work because I believe in the causes (yeah, there’s a little ‘should’ in there sometimes…)

Sometimes our internal rewards give us everything we need from our work or our volunteer efforts. But over the years I’ve noticed something: even if I love what I’m doing, hearing “thank you” increases my joy and refreshes my drive to keep giving my time.

(Studies show that if employees don’t get a 4:1 ratio of positive to negative feedback, productivity drops drastically.)

We can expect work and commitment from our employees and volunteers, but they’ll be a lot happier if we’re just-plain-nice. Whether you’re an employer, supervisor, co-volunteer, or just the recipient of deeds, make the effort to say a genuine and specific “thank you”. It only takes a minute to send an email or text of thanks, or even better, to say it in person. Your words will fuel the person’s passion for doing more good in the world or at work.

“Thank you.” There’s a lot of power in those two words. Use them. Use them a lot! Thank you to all of you for using my forecast and reading my words. It gives me so much joy (not to mention a sense of purpose) to know that I’m helping you find more fun in your world. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

June-gust continues today with more sunshine and temps well above seasonal norms. Temps in the low 50’s this morning give way to mid 80’s this afternoon. Light EAST wind. Tomorrow looks almost exactly the same as today. A solid marine push Tuesday morning starts us off with temps in the low 50’s and ends up in the mid 70’s. Expect strong wind Tuesday. No rainbows through the extended forecast.

Road and Mountain Biking

Today is going to be a spectacular day for a long road road. Light wind. Temps in the mid 80’s. Enjoy!

Pedalpalooza is happening in Portland right now, with all sorts of bike rides. The most famous and popular is the Portland World Naked Bike Ride on June 27th, the largest NBR in the world.

Closer to home (for me at least), Saturday the 20th is 12 Hours of Post Canyon and the Oregon Enduro Series Post Canyon race. Plan to ride elsewhere that day.

Upcoming Events

In events today, there are four community yoga classes. They’re all free or by donation. At 9am, there’s a class at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon and one at Crossfit Hood River. There’s a YogaFAITH class at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm and a community yoga class at Root Down in Hood River at 6. If you go to the class at Yoga Samadhi, you can eat breakfast afterwards at the new bakery in White Salmon. I forget the name, but it’s just north of White Salmon Counseling. Both the bakery and WSC are very good.

If yoga’s not your thing, there’s pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm. Ping Pong is canceled today.

If you’re looking ahead to next weekend, it’s a big one in mountain biking land: The Oregon Enduro Series will be racing on both Saturday and Sunday, and 12 Hours of Post, an informal event, is happening Saturday, meaning the trails will be crowded. Saturday evening is the Dirty Fingers Bikes anniversary part, themed leather, lace or toga, and Saturday’s also the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon.

Speaking of biking, actually running, biking and swimming, best of luck to the 18 folks from the Gorge who are competing in the Ironman 70.3 in Victoria, BC today. Go Gorge-ites, Go!

Coming up the last weekend in June, it’s the CGWA beach bash, and they need volunteers to help pull this off. If the following appeals to you, click here to sign up to help. On Thursday night, it’s the Pray for Wind dinner at Stonehedge. Friday is a high wind demo and a concert. There’s a beach party Saturday, and Sunday is a swap meet followed by a bbq. You can get more info and hit the Facebook join button if that’s your thing.

Have an awesome day today!
