Monday. The Gorge is alive with the sound of windlessness. But just for this morning. Don’t worry!

DSCF0542
This morning is the kind of morning that makes flat-water SUPers, road bikers, orchardists, wakeboarders, fishermen, and people with big hair jump for joy. It’s not-quite-glassy out there, but the wind is light enough that it wouldn’t blow over a beehive or your Aqua-net-aided scrunching. We’ll see pretty light wind for much of the day today, and then the westerlies return with force tomorrow. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Coast Wind Forecast (when I remember).

Our gradients this morning took some extra work to calculate, as the barometer at The Dalles airport is down. After a little searching, the best guess I could formulate was E .03 (pdx-dls). Given that, you can expect 10-13 today at Stevenson and Rooster, turning to west wind around 2pm, first at Stevenson and then filling in further east. We should see W 10-13 by mid-afternoon from Stevenson to Hood River, picking up to W 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles sometime after 5pm. Wind speeds will increase overnight.

Outside the Gorge, expect 23-36 at Jones Beach and 12-15 at Sauvie’s this afternoon. That Sauvie’s forecast is pure beta guess forecast. Here’s the theory: if I hazard a guess, at least I’ll look back at the actual wind at the end of the day and increase my skills. =)

Tomorrow starts with Dawn Patrol at 24-27 from Swell City to Mosier, with 20-23 or so in the Lyle-Doug’s stretch of river. You can expect the wind to pick up to 26-30 tomorrow from Swell to Doug’s by early afternoon. Stevenson will see 22-25, Maryhill will pick up to 20-23, and Arlington will join with 15-18.

Wednesday starts with Dawn Patrol at 20-23 and picks up to gusty 26-30. Thursday looks similar. Friday looks a touch less windy, so that’s the day that’s getting the bulk of my work scheduling.

Out on the coast, expect this (north/central/south)… Today: 10-15/5-10/30-35, NW swell 6′ @ 7 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/20-25/30-35, NW 4 @ 7 → SW 2 @ 13. Wednesday: 10-15/15-20/30-35, SW 2 @ 13.

Random Morning Thoughts

The Nonviolent Communication peeps have this phrase they use: “What’s alive in you?” I love this. Try it out: look inside, and see what’s talking the loudest. Is it excitement at this week’s forecast? Is it soreness from racing Ironman70.3 yesterday? Is it anger at that wanker who cut you off on that wave yesterday? Find that thing, and say hello to it. See what it says back to you.

Another thing I like about this “What’s alive in you?” question is that it can be applied to others. Next time you sit down with a friend, see if you can guess what’s alive in them. And ask about it. Does your friend seem stoked? Name that, “Dude, you seem super stoked today!”

Inevitably, naming what’s alive in your conversation partner will lead to an interesting conversation. And if they deflect, from what’s alive, you can just ask them what they’d like to talk about instead. And they’ll name something else that’s alive. And the conversation will be fun, vibrant, and joyful for all.

What’s alive in me? For me, right now, it’s joy at all these awesome books that my friends Jenny, Pablo, and Paul gave me. So much exciting stuff to learn. Plus, being around books gives me comfort. Books make my space feel cozy and safe. So, yeah, books are alive in me. What’s alive in you?

Gorge Weather Forecast

In an amazing shift of weather patterns, Mother Nature is providing some high clouds this morning. Incredible! Expect varying levels of high clouds today as a shortwave approaches. That’ll give us the additional possibility of cumulus clouds over the Cascades this afternoon. Other than that, June-gust continues, with temps in the low 50’s early and the mid 80’s this afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

The high temp drops about 10 degrees tomorrow, for mid 50’s to start and mid 70’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks a lot like Tuesday. We might see more clouds and possibly (although not likely) a few sprinkles at the end of the week. I wouldn’t put money on it, tho.

Road and Mountain Biking

I keep forgetting to mention this, but you JUST HAVE TO ride the new pavement on McCurdy Farms Hill. No, I’m serious. The ABSOLUTE WORST stretch of road in Hood River now has the best pavement. I’m talking about Tucker Road between Portland Drive and Tucker Bridge. It’s been repaved, and it’s awesome. And wider, I think. Oh yes, it’s beautiful. I’d even do hill repeats on it now because it’s so awesome. Thank you, Hood River County!

In other news, Pedalpalooza is happening in Portland right now, with all sorts of bike rides. The most famous and popular is the Portland World Naked Bike Ride on June 27th, the largest NBR in the world.

Closer to home (for me at least), Saturday the 20th is 12 Hours of Post Canyon and the Oregon Enduro Series Post Canyon race. Plan to ride elsewhere that day.

You’ve been in the river all day playing like a fish. You’re hungry. You want sushi. Hit up Sushi Okalani’s happy hour, Mon-Fri 5-6pm, and Sunday 5pm-9:30. You’ll find $5 rolls, specials on sake and beer, and edamame. You’ll also find a new chef who’s serving up specials like Korean brisket & seared scallops with a ginger-cream sauce and avo-wasabi puree. You can get sushi to go, and you can get to-go sake with that sushi. No open container law in HR means you can have a sushi-sake picnic. Yay!

Upcoming Events

Off the water today, there are three free community classes: There’s Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. There’s community yoga at the Mt. Hood town hall at 6:30, and there’s community yoga at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. Tomorrow’s sportier with pickup touch rugby at 5:30 at the Hood River Marina, yoga at 7 at the Mosier Senior Center, and Triathlon practice at 6pm at Mayer Park in Rowena.

Tomorrow night is also mindfulness meditation practice (30-40 minutes, followed by a talk) with the monks from Pacific Hermitage. I promise you it’s super chill, welcoming, and a cool crowd. Jump on the bandwagon and check it out. All you need to bring is yourself. Chairs, blankets, etc. are provided. 6:30pm, Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.

Coming up this weekend, it’s one to stay out of Post Canyon unless you’re spectating. The Oregon Enduro race is both Saturday and Sunday and the informal 12 hours of Post is Saturday. For equestrians, the Wheatacres Ranch Challenge is Saturday, and for runners, the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon is Saturday. As always, thanks to the Kreps family for hosting that one on their land. If you would like to buy Kreps cows to eat for dinner, you can give them a call at 509-493-2361.

Coming up the last weekend in June, it’s the CGWA beach bash, and they need volunteers to help pull this off. If the following appeals to you, click here to sign up to help. On Thursday night, it’s the Pray for Wind dinner at Stonehedge. Friday is a high wind demo and a concert. There’s a beach party Saturday, and Sunday is a swap meet followed by a bbq. You can get more info and hit the Facebook join button if that’s your thing.

Have an awesome day today!
