Saturday. No rest for you yet!

DSC_9626
Oh what a difference a day makes. Our gradients are down today, the wind is down, and the larger sails and kites that have been gathering dust over the past week will see some use today. The weather models are of about zero use this morning; they’re predicting we’ll see glassy conditions through early afternoon. With the 7am gradient at .10 (pdx-dls), E.01 (dls-psc) and .64 (eph-dls), I just don’t see “glassy” as a probable outcome today. In addition, we’ll see a weak weather system swing through Washington this afternoon, and that will give the wind an assist, at least at Stevenson. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Coast Wind Forecast (when I remember).

So, let’s ignore the models today and just wing the forecast. I’m going with a slow build to 18-22 by late morning, holding until that shortwave swings into WA. When that happens, we’ll see the wind pick up at Stevenson to 21-24 or a touch more. Other locations between Viento and The Dalles will likely see a drop to gusty 15-18 after a short-lived burst of 21-24. The eastern Gorge does not look like the place to be for wind sports today; you’ll be better off wakeboarding or SUPing or flyfishing out there.

Model runs for tomorrow suggest light west wind early switching to east wind at 15-18 at Stevenson and Rooster by mid-morning and holding through the afternoon. The rest of the Gorge gets a prediction of E 5-10 tomorrow. To be quite honest, something feels off about this for me, but I’m going with it for now.

The forecast gets a little easier as cooler air starts to filter in to Portland Monday afternoon. Expect a light wind start on Monday with W 22-25 in the afternoon, strongest from Stevenson to Hood River. If the extended run is correct, we’ll see 28-32+ on Tuesday (with Dawn Patrol). If Murphy’s Law is correct, we’ll see 30+ all day Wednesday (the actual forecast is 25-29) because I have not one, not two, but three meetings scheduled in Portland. All good meetings, all meetings I’m super-stoked about, but meetings that will keep me off the river. Unless there’s 6am Dawn Patrol… (evil grin as I think about showing up at my meetings filthy with Columbia River water…)

Out on the coast, the gods are bday gifting Erin B. with wind and waves. You too can join in the celebration by making a bit of a drive. Expect the following (north/central/south)… Today: 15-20/25-30/40, NW groundswell 4′ @ 11 seconds. Tomorrow: 20-25/20-25/30-35, NW 3 @10. Monday: 10-15/10-15/25-30, NW 2 @ 10.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was sitting here at my desk (kitchen table, actually) this morning trying to think of something to write. The only things coming up are too personal to share, and my attention kept getting pulled to Mt. Adams. My view is amazing. If I need to smile and feel a sense of awe and wonder, I just look out my window at Adams, the Columbia, Underwood Mountain, Burdoin Mountain, and (often) birds of prey in the trees.

If you don’t have such a view, you can still have awe and wonder by looking out your window. Look at that house across the street. Isn’t it amazing what we humans can accomplish? We created that color of paint, we made those double-paned windows. We built that chimney and that car. And the glow from the neighbor’s TV set? We created satellites, cable, video cameras, acting, costumes, and a million other little inventions.

There is awe and wonder all around you. We humans are capable of amazing things. If you don’t have anything else going on, reflect on that. You too are an amazing human capable of awe-inspiring things. Have an awesome day, awesome human.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another sunny day in June-gust (Aug-une?) with temps in the mid 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind today. No rainbows. It is possible we’ll see a few high clouds today as a little weather system swings through WA. Tomorrow looks sunny with temps in the low 50’s in the morning and mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Monday looks sunny with temps in the low 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Increasing westerlies during the day. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I keep forgetting to mention that Pedalpalooza is happening in Portland right now, with all sorts of bike rides. The most famous and popular is the Portland World Naked Bike Ride on June 27th, the largest NBR in the world. Coming up on the 20th, it’s 12 Hours of Post Canyon and the Oregon Enduro Series Post Canyon race. That’s next Saturday. Plan to ride elsewhere that day.

In other news, tomorrow looks like a stellar day for a long road bike ride with light wind and reasonable temps.

Happening all day long is the Gorge Cup windsurfing races at the Event Site in Hood River and the St Jude’s Saddleup trail ride in Wasco. If you want something more mellow, the SUP Movie plays at Andrew’s at 4, and the movie “The Search for Freedom” is also playing.

Tomorrow’s free yoga day, with classes at 9am at Crossfit Hood River and Yoga Samadhi and at 6:30 in the evening at Root Down.

Have an awesome day today!
