Gorge Wind Forecast

A couple days of westerlies are lined up. Easterlies follow on Tuesday. After that, we move into a very active weather pattern; a series of deep offshore low pressure systems will encourage a period of light and variable wind.

Looking at Sunday, we have a cold front hanging out offshore and a weak surface low moving into BC. Offshore high pressure builds behind that low this afternoon and nudges the wind upward. Expect westerlies at 5mph in the western Gorge this morning with light/variable wind out east. By early afternoon, we’ll have W 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles. If the timing is as the models suggest, the wind will build to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 2pm. The eastern Gorge stays light/variable all day. River flow is 33,900cfs, river temp is 59F, and high temp forecast is 62F.

Thanks to a low hanging out in the Columbia Basin, Monday also looks windy. Southerly flow and troughing offshore removes the synoptic-scale support. It’s possible the wind could underperform. Either way, expect it to be gusty. Dawn Patrol westerlies start with gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 14-17 from Avery to Arlington. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 23-27 from Stevenson to Arlington. Morning temp: 42. Afternoon: 56.

A deep offshore low, 986mb, sets up easterlies on Tuesday. You’ll find 20-25 from Rooster to Viento by mid-morning. In the afternoon, the western Gorge holds and the east fills in: you’ll find E 10-15 from Swell to Arlington. Morning low: 37. High temp: 60. After Tuesday, all bets are off. A series of lows and fronts dominate the weather for a warmer-than-winter but winter-like overall setup. Enjoy the wind the next few days!
