Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Yesterday’s wild weather on Mt. Hood (about half the lifts shut down) rives way to much mellow conditions for Sunday, Monday, and early Tuesday. Another very strong system arrives late Tuesday and sets up a likely full shutdown for Wednesday.

For Super Bowl Sunday, scattered flurries give way to clear sky. Partly cloudy sky in the evening leads to scattered flurries overnight with just a trace of new, if that. The freezing level will be 500-1000′ all day with mountain temps in the teens. The freezing level drops to 0′ Sunday night. Wind: NW 10 in the morning, W 5-10 in the afternoon, NW 10-15 after midnight.

A few flurries Monday morning give way to clear sky for the rest of the day and night. The freezing level will be 500′ early, 1000′ midday, and 0′ overnight. Wind: NW 10-15 early, NW 20-25 midday and overnight.

Tuesday starts off clear, but high clouds quickly move in. If the timing is just right, this will result in a spectacular sunrise. The snow level will be 0′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, 3500′ in the evening, and 7000′ after midnight. Snow starts up around 10am, becoming heavier in the afternoon. As upper air temps warm, the snow becomes wet and then switches to rain sometime after midnight. Just a trace of snow falls during the day. 0.4” water value (WV) falls as snow after 4pm, for 3-5” of increasingly dense snow. After midnight, about 0.5” rain falls. Wind: NW 20-25 during the day, NW 50 around midnight, and NW 65 (wow!) after midnight.

Super strong NW wind shuts down the resorts on Wednesday as rain falls all day. The snow level will be 7000′ during the day, 6500′ in the evening, 5500′ around midnight, and 4000′ after midnight, by which time there won’t be much precip left. We’re too far out for precision, but it does appear that 2-2.5” rain will fall, followed by just a couple inches of snow. With the wind at NW 65 early and only dropping to NW 50 in the afternoon, it’s unlikely the resorts, at least the higher resorts, will be operating. At least it’s not boring… go enjoy the fabulous packed powder Sunday through Tuesday morning.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light westerlies at 5-10mph on Sunday morning pick up to gusty 13-16 on Sunday afternoon from Stevenson to Moiser. River flow is 112kcfs and temp is 39 degrees. Monday starts with W 10-13 form Stevenson to The Dalles. the wind picks up to 20-23 from Stevenson to Avery with 10-13 farther east. On Tuesday, expect gusty 7-10 everywhere in the morning with gusty W 12-15 east of The Dalles in the afternoon. Wednesday’s tentative forecast is gusty 25-29.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Partly cloudy sky this morning stays that way. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Monday may start with clouds and scattered snow flurries, but the sun will come out. Temps will be near 30 early and in the low 40’s later. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks cold and clear to start. High clouds move in mid-morning and then precip. It’ll likely start as snow and switch to rain by afternoon. Temps will be in the mid to upper 20’s early and near 40 later. It’s possible we’ll see snow continue in the early evening before switching back to rain. Light west wind. 78% chance of rainbows.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Road and Mountain Biking

It’s snowy or muddy on all the trails now. Please leave them alone so you don’t do damage. The only exception may be the lower parts of Syncline, but they are probably muddy enough that you will do damage too. Think about gravel or road biking today, as temps should make it into the upper 40’s with just-sprinkles falling from the sky.
