Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Saturday morning is starting out with mist or drizzle on the mountain, but that liquid precip is switching to snow occasionally. So,, let’s call it mixed precip. That should continue Saturday. Sunday and Monday both look sunny on the hill with increasingly warm weather. Precipitation returns on Tuesday into Wednesday. Temps will be right on the edge for snow. Looking out farther, temps continue to stay in the “too warm” zone with a chance for a weak atmospheric river incident toward the end of next week.

For Saturday, expect a cloudy day on the mountain with a mix of rain, mist, and wet snow at 5000′. the snow level will be 5500′ all day, dropping to 5000′ this evening and 3500′ after midnight. At least one model seems to be going way overboard on precip amount today. Let’s go with 0.3-0.5” water value during the day (probably the lower end, given various factors). That precip will fall as various precip types at 5000′, with 1-2” snow above 6000′. About an inch of snow will fall overnight after the snow level drops. Wind will be SW 20 early, WSW 20 in the afternoon, WNW 10-15 overnight, and NW 15-20 after midnight.

Sunday looks clear once you get above the low clouds. The free air freezing level will be 3500′ during the day. It’ll rise to 7000′ overnight. Wind will be NW 15-20 early, NW 10-15 int eh afternoon, and W 5 overnight. Monday also looks clear above low clouds. The free air freezing level will be between 7000′ and 9000′ all day. Wind will be light westerly early, W 15 in the afternoon, and SW 10 overnight.

The next round of precip is slated for Tuesday night into Wednesday. Temps look like 0-2C at 5000′, so just cold enough for wet snow. Not much precip, perhaps 0.2” WV, accompanies this system. And… it’s really too far out to be making an accurate forecast. Looking later in the week, an atmospheric river, the sensation formerly known as the Pineapple Express, takes aim at the west coast somewhere. This combo of warm air and moisture does not bode well for the snowpack if it hits Mt. Hood. Perhaps it will miss! Do your snow dances!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies continues on Saturday. They start at 30-35 for Rooster and 10-15 for Stevenson and Viento. With rain in the forecast, Stevenson and Viento will likely underperform. The wind this afternoon backs off to 10-15 at Rooster and 5-10 near Stevenson. River flow is 96,300cfs and temp is 45 degrees. Sunday starts with west wind at 5-10 and picks up to 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Monday starts calm and picks up to E 20-25.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Road and Mountain Biking

We’ve had quite a freeze thaw cycle recently, so be aware if you’re riding. Please turn around if you see stretches of mud ahead. Trails that have frozen and then thawed are extremely delicate, and you will do permanent damage to the tread if you ride when it’s sloppy. Also, there is snow on upper-elevation trails at this point, at least in the Mt. Hood Forest. Probably not so much in the Gifford Pinchot.
