Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

While the Mt. Hood forecast over the next several days is anything but dry, it’s also far from epic. Will there be enough snow to open the resorts by Thanksgiving? I doubt it, but miracles of precipitation have happened before with the benefit of strong orographics. Let’s take a closer look at what’s coming.

For Saturday, we’ll just have a dry day on the mountain. Clouds move in this evening, and rain starts up after midnight. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ all day – it’s worth noting that the day started at 43 degrees at the top of Cascade (7300′) and 28 degrees in Hood River (350′). With the arrival of the after-midnight system, the snow level will drop to 7500′. That’s not enough to help us out. About 0.2” water value (WV) falls by 4am in the form of rain. Wind will be W 15 early, W 25 in the afternoon, and WNW 45 after midnight.

Sunday morning starts out rainy. After the bulk of the moisture passes, that rain will switch to snow. The snow level will be 7500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′-2000′ after midnight. About 0.6-0.8” WV falls by 4pm. Let’s call that 0.5” rain and 1-3” snow from 5000′ on up. Orographic precipitation continues overnight with approximately 0.3” WV. Let’s call that 3-4” new snow at the resorts. Wind will be WNW 45 in the morning, NW 25 in the afternoon, and NW 30 overnight.

Monday starts with continued orographic snowfall. The snow level will be about 1500′ all day, falling to 500′ by Tuesday morning. About 0.2” WV falls during the day, for 2-3” new. Another 0.3” WV falls overnight, for 3-4” of snow. Wind will be NW 30 early, WNW 25 in the afternoon, and NW 25 overnight. Moisture from the next system appears to stay too far to the south to benefit us. Several days of dry weather stack on after Tuesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much is going on Saturday morning, but something will happen later on and more will happen on Sunday…. Saturday starts light and variable. Weather systems approaching later today will nudge the westerlies to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. River flow is 99,000cfs and temp is 50 degrees. Sunday morning starts off with a memorial paddle out for the amazing and inspiring Steve Gates of Big Winds. That’s at 10:30am at the Nichols Boat Basin. Please bring a lei, flowers, or something from nature to toss in the middle of the circle as we contemplate the life and death of this giant-hearted and inspiring man.

Naturally and appropriately, it will be windy on Sunday. The day starts with 10-13 in the west and 16-19 in the far east. As very strong (1033mb or so) high pressure builds off the coast, westerlies pick up to gusty 24-28 from Stevenson to Rufus. Monday’s post-frontal wind looks like 12-15 through the entire Gorge, at least for the start of the day.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is back on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Nothing early Saturday goes clear and then probably turns partly high overcast in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and low 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday starts out with showers under mostly cloudy sky and turns partly cloudy and windy. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 50’s later. Light to moderate westerlies early, strong westerlies later. 99% chance of rainbows. Monday looks cloudy and showery. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s later. Snow level 1000-1500′. Light west wind. 99% chance of rainbows.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Road and Mountain Biking

Temps were below freezing on Friday night, and they’ll be above freezing on Saturday morning. That means we are in freeze-thaw territory. Do not ride trails that are tree canopy free today. For example, the part of Seven Streams that runs through the clearcut. Bad. Mobius: bad. Syncline might be dry enough to avoid free-thaw mud, but maybe not. Turn around if you encounter freeze-thaw, and please… stay on the designated trails. Do not cut the corners or make new trails. Other options: anything up high – it’s all still snow-free. Get it now, because upper-elevation snow starting Sunday will put an end to those trails, probably for the season.
