Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s another drizzly morning on Mt. Hood. Clickbait forecasts all over the internet are forecasting an atmospheric river and “feet” of snow for this upcoming week on Mt. Hood. I suggest you take that with a bitter pill or a serious grain of salt. Your best chance for significant snowfall is going to be Monday during the day. After that, generally speaking, temps look quite warm. Read on for details.

For Sunday, a drizzling start quickly gives way to fog, then sunshine. Rain returns overnight. The snow level will be 7000′ during the day, 6500′ when the next round of precip hits tonight, and 5500′ after midnight. Just a trace of precip falls during the day. About 0.6” falls as rain overnight. Wind will be SW 20-30 early, W 35 mid-morning, SW 10-15 in the afternoon, and SW 20-30 overnight.

Sunday starts with a rain/snow mix and transitions to snow. The midday period looks partly cloudy to clear. Snow refreshes the slopes overnight. Sunday’s snow level: 5500′ early, dropping to 3500′ by the time lifts open. About 0.3” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 1-2” of wet snow. Another 0.3” WV falls overnight, giving the slopes about 3” of fresh not-bad-at-all snow. Wind will be SW 20-30 early, SW 30-40 mid-morning, W 30 in the afternoon, and SW 20-30 overnight.

Monday looks snowy, then rainy. The snow level will be 3500′ early. It will rise to 4500′ in the afternoon and 7000′ overnight before dropping to 4500′ in the wee hours of Tuesday. About 0.8” WV falls during the day, for 7-9” of fresh mid-quality snow. Another 1.5” WV falls overnight, initially with a couple inches of snow but then with an inch of rain. The sky will clear around midnight, ending the precip and allowing the slopes (most likely) to freeze as the freezing level drops. Wind will be WSW 30-40 early, SW 20-30 mid-morning, SW 35-45 in the evening and overnight.

About half a foot of snow is predicted for Tuesday. After that, it appears temps rise and warm, bringing more rain to Mt. Hood. Looking long-range, it appears the general pattern will shift next weekend or early the following week. That will result in colder weather with systems coming out of the NW. that’s a better setup. Cross your fingers!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies at 15-20 on Saturday morning fade to light or calm by early afternoon. Then they pick up to 20-25 again after 4pm. Sunday starts with W 15-20 near Rooster and E 15-20 near Stevenson. By mid-morning, we’ll have W 10-13 everywhere. For a short period in the afternoon, the wind will pick up to gusty 25-29 from The Dalles to Boardman. You’ll have to drive preemptively if you’re going to catch it. Monday starts light and variable and picks up to E 10-15.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s snowy or muddy on all the trails now. Please leave them alone so you don’t do damage. The only exception may be the lower parts of Syncline, but they are probably muddy enough that you will do damage too. Think about gravel or road biking today, as temps should make it into the upper 40’s with just-sprinkles falling from the sky.
