Friday. THREEPEAT!

DSC_1798
As I was writing this forecast this morning, it was not-quite nuking, although still likely 3.5 at Swell. The deeper marine layer is getting us off to a slightly later start today. Models suggest another day of very strong wind, but I am a little concerned with this upper level trough moving into Alberta and the accompanying bumps in the force. My best recommendation is to sail early, just in case. Something else to note: I talked to some folks who drove out to The Wall last night, and despite a reading of 37, it really wasn’t windy on the river (wrong direction or something). I’m not sure what that says about today out there, but it may not be the proper wind direction (although given the setup, it should be). I have one more thing to say before we jump in: THREEPEAT!!!!! Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Coast Wind Forecast (when I remember).

On to this morning’s gradients: .17 (pdx-dls!!), .08 (dlsl-psc), and .52 (eph-dls). These are big gradients – expect big wind. 28-32+ seems pretty reasonable for Swell to Mosier by mid-morning, with Doug’s quickly joining the mix (the deeper marine push will help with that). Models insist (and gradients suggest) that the Rufus section of the Columbia will join in the fun today with 30+, and that Arlington will see 28-32 late this afternoon. I agree, but I can’t guarantee directional correctness for the wind.

Tomorrow looks much less windy. Expect 10-13 or less early with more in the afternoon. Models suggest 16-19 in the afternoon, but they’ve been tending light on this kind of setup. I’m going to call it 20-23 in the afternoon, strongest from Stevenson to Mosier. Sunday starts off with light EAST wind and picks up to E 10-13 through pretty much the whole Gorge.

Looks like the east wind will continue on Monday with westerlies returning on Tuesday and sticking around for the extended forecast.

Out on the coast, you can expect the following (north/central/south)… Today: 15-20/25-30/f**king windy, ground swell (not wind swell) NW 4′ @ 13 seconds. Tomorrow: 20/25-30/f**king windy, NW 6 @ 11. Sunday: 15-20/20-25/f**king windy, NW 5 @ 10. Go Pistol River Wave Bash, go!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m sore. When it’s super windy, I struggle with what size sail to rig. I was on a 3.2 yesterday, and it seemed perfect. I ride Hot Sails Superfreaks (shameless marketing plug) for my small sails, and they are off-the-charts good in super windy conditions. They’re silent, for one, and smooth (not twitchy) for another. And they flow in gusts rather than jerking me around. So I tend to not notice I’m overpowered because the 3.2 and 2.9 are so danged awesome.

This tendency to not rig down is fueled by my tendency to drive myself hard when sporting. If I’m having trouble turning down waves or am scared to throw backs/forwards/pushes, my first instinct isn’t to consider that I might be overpowered; It’s to think I’m being wimpy.

I finally went in yesterday and rigged a 2.9. And then I could turn on swell and throw forwards and backs (but not push loops, because I’m currently scared to do them). I was having even more fun than I was on a 3.2.

So, the moral of this story is… if you find you’re beating yourself up over something (anything), consider that there might be a better explanation than, “I suck”. It’s most likely you can find a more better story than that. And that’ll lead to you having more fun.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear outside my window this morning, and shall remain so today. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow may see a few high clouds. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. No rainbows. Sunday morning looks a little cooler, with temps in the mid 40’s. Sunday afternoon looks hotter, with temps in the mid 80’s. Light EAST wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I keep forgetting to mention that Pedalpalooza is happening in Portland right now, with all sorts of bike rides. The most famous and popular is the Portland World Naked Bike Ride on June 27th, the largest NBR in the world. You might think it would be uncomfortable to be naked in public. A surprising number of people (approximately 12,000), do not. Or perhaps they are uncomfortable, but they find the ride so enjoyable that it outweighs the discomfort. I recommend you do it if you haven’t.

Closer to home, the trails are dusty (in JUNE), and it’s too windy to road ride today. Tomorrow morning looks great, and Sunday looks fantastic for a long ride, especially up in the hills.

If you are planning ahead, plan to not ride Post Canyon the weekend of the 20th. Not only is it the Enduro, but it’s 12 Hours of Post, and there will be racers all over the trail system. In other cycling news, the 20th is also the Dirty Fingers Anniversary party, themed “Black Tie, Leather or Toga” this year. Start working on your costume.

Upcoming Events

Coming up the last weekend in June, it’s the CGWA beach bash, and they need volunteers to help pull this off. If the following appeals to you, click here to sign up to help. On Thursday night, it’s the Pray for Wind dinner at Stonehedge. Friday is a high wind demo and a concert. There’s a beach party Saturday, and Sunday is a swap meet followed by a bbq. You can get more info and hit the Facebook join button if that’s your thing.

Today is Friday, and that means it’s Kickstand Coffee Run time. Every Friday at 7am you can meet at 13th and State for a 4 mile run that earns you a free coffee and donut. There’s another trail run tomorrow morning at 8am at the bottom of Post Canyon Road, but that one doesn’t come with coffee and donuts. I slept through the run, so I’m telling you after it’s over, but you can go next week. =)

You can play pickleball at Westside elementary tomorrow at 9:30, you can watch windsurfing races at the Event Site, and you can join the horseback trail ride in Wasco. The SUP Movie is playing at Andrew’s at 4pm on Saturday. The Pistol River Wave Bash is happening in Gold Beach through the weekend with Victory at Sea condition.

Have an awesome day today!
