Gorge Wind Forecast

The weekend weather for the Gorge will be dominated by the influence of a cold low pressure trough squatting over the Pacific Northwest. This will bring showers and atmospheric instability, once again making for tricky forecasting. The best case scenario today is 10-13 everywhere this morning with a slow build to 13-16 (Stevenson to Mosier) and gusty 22-27 (Lyle to Arlington, strongest Lyle to Rufus). However… if we do see thundershowers this afternoon, all bets are off. For the best results, head east of any low clouds. River temp is 59 degrees. Flow is 267kcfs.

Sunday also brings clouds and a chance of thundershowers. A low pressure system approaching the south coast in the afternoon will contribute to the messiness of the overall weather picture. Sounds great, huh? We’ll start Sunday with 5-10 in the western Gorge and 10-13 east of Mosier. The wind, or at least the gradients (!) will build to gusty 21-26 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon.

High pressure builds off Vancouver Island on Monday, stabilizing the atmosphere, ending rain chances, and setting up a light wind day in the Gorge. The GFS is predicting 10-13 early and light westerlies in the afternoon. The Euro likes 5-10 early and 12-15 in the afternoon. Given the setup, I think the Euro is more likely to be correct.

BONUS: Jones Saturday: 12-15 + rain. Sunday: 5-10. Monday: 5-10ish. Sauvie’s Saturday: W 10-13. Sunday: W 5-10. Monday: N 5-10, maybe stronger late. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: W10/W10/NW5, W swell 6′ at 11 seconds. Sunday: W10/W10/SW5, W 7′ @ 10. Monday: 20-25/20-25/25-30, W 6′ @ 9.

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

The snow level for the weekend will be unseasonably low, and atmospheric instability will contribute to a chance of thundershowers and snowfall, especially in the afternoon. For Saturday, the snow level will be 5500′ during the day and 3500′ after midnight. Up to .3” WV falls during the day, for an inch or two of new snow above 5500′. Up to 1” of snow falls down to 3500′ tonight. Wind will be WSW 20 in the morning, WNW 25 in the afternoon, and W 30 overnight. As I said, lightning and thunder and heavier snow showers are possible in the afternoon.

Sunday brings continuing snow flurries. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Up to 1” of new snow will fall. Thunderstorms and heavier periods of snowfall are possible in the afternoon. Wind will be W 30 early, WSW 25 in the afternoon, and WNW 20 overnight. Monday looks clear. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ early and 8000′ in the afternoon. WNW wind at 20 drops to 5 in the afternoon. Tuesday looks clear. FAF 12,000′. Light wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

All the road bike rides are open. There is a work party on Surveyor’s Ridge on Saturday. Meet at Little John snopark at 9am. Fifteenmile is now open. 450 is open with one tree down. Gunsight, Boulder Lakes and High Prairie remain closed, as best I know. No word on Huffman Peak. Falls Creek is open top to bottom. Be aware that the snow level will be around 5000′ on Saturday and 4000′ on Sunday.

Upcoming Events

Events today include the continuation of the rebuild of the Children’s Park in Hood River. Contribute time, money or tools by visiting the City of Hood River’s website. The windless Pistol River Wave Bash continues in Gold Beach through the weekend.

There’s a trail run this morning at 8 in Post Canyon, which is probably going to be a bit on the slick side. Mountain View Cycles has a group road bike ride at 9, and Yoga Samadhi has a free meditation workshop from 1-5 today with the Pacific Hermitage monks.

You have a chance to give back to the trails today by joining Ranger Jimmy T for a surveyor’s ridge work party – meet at Little John snowpark at 9am. Dress warmly, because the snow level is around 5500′ today. It’ll drop to 4000′ tonight, so be aware if you’re planning high-elevation activities.
