Gorge Wind Forecast

Friday’s starting off with light westerlies and sunshine, but that’s all going to change this afternoon as a cold front sweeps into the Gorge. We’ll see westerlies at 7-12 this morning. Around 11am, the wind will start picking up, giving us gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Mosier through 2pm or so. That’s about when the front will hit Stevenson, starting up the rain there. Areas to the east will see a short-lived (up to 2 hours?) burst of gusty 25-29 (big gusts!), moving rapidly eastward to Arlington. Rain will shut down the wind at all the beaches by 8pm. Preemptive driving might work best with this setup. River temps is 59 degrees. Flow is way down at 278kcfs, a totally reasonable flow for the Rufus stretch.

Saturday brings showers to the western Gorge along with afternoon atmospheric instability for all locations. This will impact wind quality and predictability. The day starts with less-than-10 west of Hood River and 7-12 from Mosier eastward. The wind will slowly build to an afternoon max of gusty 24-29 from Lyle to Arlington, assuming the atmosphere doesn’t destabilize enough to shut it down.

An upper level low approaches the coast on Sunday, replacing Saturday’s offshore high pressure. Gradients slacken, and so does the wind. Western Gorge showers keep the wind at 5-10 or less near Stevenson all day. Other locations start off with 10-13, perhaps, although not certainly, maxing out with 15-18 in the afternoon from Hood River to The Dalles. Monday doesn’t have much in the way of wind.

BONUS: No bonus forecast today due to south or west wind on the coast for the next three days. Only chance at Jones is gusty 13-16 on Saturday, but it’s also likely to be raining, so I wouldn’t advise driving for that. Nothing happening at Sauvie’s either.
