Gorge Wind Forecast

The instability and frequent weather systems of the last weeks or so have really been doing a number on the wind. Today, Sunday, will be no exception, as a low pressure trough sits over us and an upper level low hangs off the coast. Showery weather all day long and weak gradients won’t give us much to write home about (or post on Instagram). Expect 5-10 through the whole Gorge this morning. Desert sunshine will probably bump the wind up to gusty 13-16 late this afternoon east of The Dalles.

High pressure settles in across the PNW on Monday. The day starts with calm wind. Thermal gradients in the afternoon will nudge the wind into the 12-15 range from Stevenson to Mosier from mid afternoon on through the evening.

Tuesday looks hot and dry. We’ll have east wind at 20-25 from Rooster to Home Valley with afternoon easterlies at 5mph in the rest of the Gorge. A weak frontal system on Wednesday combines with offshore high pressure for a chance of west wind at 26-30. Gusty, unreliable, up-and-down west wind! Models disagree on the wind for the latter half of the week, but they do agree on hot, calm weather for the weekend.

BONUS: Jones Sunday: 5-10. Monday: 12-15. Tuesday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Sunday: X. Monday: 10-13 late. Tuesday: 7-10 late. Coast (north/central/south). Sunday: SW10/SW15/SW15, W swell 6′ at 10 seconds. Monday: 20/20/20-25, W 5′ @ 9. Tuesday: W5/W10/N 25-30, W 4′ @ 10.

Road and Mountain Biking

I rode yesterday and it was dusty. Close to 1/10” rain in Hood River last night will dramatically improve trail conditions, although it may be slick this morning. I’m guessing the 44 Road trails also saw rain, so you’ll find good dirt out there today. 450 and Fifteenmile have joined the “open” list. You’ll also find falling snowflakes about 4000′. Road biking will be good due to light wind and bad due to rain.

Upcoming Events

Events today include the last day of the windless Pistol River Wave Bash down in Gold Beach, and the final day of the Children’s Park rebuild in Hood River. Swing by 9th and Eugene to see what a community can do if everyone works together!

There’s free yoga today at 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon, all-ages pickup touch rugby at 11 at the Hood River Marina park, and free air classes for kids and their parents at Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River from 1 to 3. Today’s the Sandy Ridge Enduro bike race, so you’ll want to ride bikes somewhere other than there. If you want to work on trails, Trailkeepers has work parties on Wygant Peak next Saturday and Sunday – you can sign up on Facebook.
