Gorge Wind Forecast

Hopefully you’ve managed to tire yourself out from the windsports over the last couple of weeks, because like it or not, you’re probably going to get a two day break starting Sunday. High pressure builds into the region and a heat low sets up along the coast. This turns the wind lightly offshore for Sunday and most of Monday.

For saturday, westerlies start in the 10-13 range in the west and the 20-23 range east of The Dalles. Driving eastward will simply waste gas today, as the eastern Gorge wind will die off early, dropping to 5-10. Westerlies shift to the Stevenson – The Dalles stretch this afternoon, maxing out at 17-21. River flow is 241kcfs and river temp is 59 degrees.

Sunday turns sunny and warm. Max wind for the day will be found near Stevenson and Rooster Rock, where easterlies pick up to 10-15 midday. Viento might join in too, but the rest of the Gorge will have nearly-calm conditions. Monday starts with light easterlies and turns around to westerlies at 10-13 late in the afternoon. Keep an eye on Thursday and Friday for big west wind days.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Saturday: NW 5-10/15-20/30-35, NW swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Sunday: 20-25/25-30/30-35, W 2′ @ 7. Road and Mountain Biking

Last night’s rain probably refreshed many trails. Be prepared for BROWN POW! Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are open. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open. Despite advice to the contrary, Red Hill Road was open to bikes on Saturday, 6/1. Proof is on The Strava. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.

Upcoming Events

Saturday brings the St. Jude’s Saddleup fundraiser ride in Wasco and a work party on Punchbowl Falls. Boardman has the “Beat the Brewer” 5k on Saturday (you will try to run faster than a brewmaster named Logan), and there’s a barn dance (with pie, please bring one) in Dufur Saturday evening.

Sunday is the Gorgeous Hood to Hood Race from Timberline to Hood River. There’s a work party on the Sandy Ridge trail system Sunday and a social at Rockford Grange at 4:30. The Black Dog Dualsport Ride is based in Odell both Saturday and Sunday, utilizing trails and roads across Hood River County all weekend.
