Gorge Wind Forecast

Today and tomorrow will be the last westerly wind day until next Thursday; high pressure builds over the inland Northwest. Temperatures soar over the western half of the state (everywhere, really), and Gorge wind will turn light easterly in response through Wednesday.

Friday starts off with plenty of low clouds in the west and sunshine in the east. Offshore high pressure strengthens today, increasing the large-scale gradients and the wind. Assistance comes in the form of a low dropping into northern Washington late this afternoon. While this setup is ideal, the addition of atmospheric instability is not, and thunderstorm signatures on the radar at 6am are a bad sign for the reliability of today’s wind.

So… 10-13 in the west early with 13-16 east of The Dalles. Avery to Arlington should hit 27-31+ for a period today, strongest early afternoon on through sunset, and the Rowena stretch may join in. Western Gorge launches, Stevenson to Mosier, will likely end up mired in clouds from mid-morning on, keeping the wind at 12-15. Here’s the problem: if we’re seeing instability at 6am, we’re going to see more thunderheads as the day warms up to a chilly 58. If thunderstorms develop, there’s no telling what the wind will do. So… keep an eye on the radar and cross your fingers for a big afternoon on the river! It’s worth noting that the best chance of thunder is from The Dalles westward, meaning the best wind will likely be found in the far east.

High pressure starts to push inland on Saturday. Morning speeds will be 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 13-16 east of there. Driving east will be a bust on Saturday, as the wind will drop to 7-10 or less. Western Gorge… tricky. Depends on the extent of inland pressure rises. Call it 14-17, fading mid-afternoon to 10-13.

Sunday brings a switch to easterlies at 10-15 from Stevenson to Viento, allowing you to do an easterly downwinder on your Downwind Floating Object. 10-15mph easterlies continue through Wednesday. The ECMWF and GFS agree on a return to westerlies on Thursday after a period of 95 degree weather. Clear your schedule for Thursday and Friday next week!

Road and Mountain Biking

Post is open with ball bearings. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are open, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open. Despite advice to the contrary, Red Hill Road was open to bikes on Saturday, 6/1. Proof is on The Strava. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk.

If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
