Gorge Wind Forecast

Warm, sunny, and mostly-easterly weather is forecast for the next few days. Westerlies return ahead of an incoming weather system late Tuesday and stick around for Wednesday. Wind strength is far from clear for this time period, so cross your fingers for “windy” and leave it at that for now!

Let’s start with Saturday. Dawn pressures were 30.18/30.14/30.15 giving you just enough gradient and just enough wind to sneak in a dawn patrol session at Viento (15-20mph) before the wind fades. Models suggest a heat low will settle right over the Cascade Crest today. The exact location will determine the exact wind, but it’s likely to be too light for this to matter much. East of Mosier, the wind turns light easterly this afternoon. The western Gorge is trickier; different models provide solutions from E 10mph to W 10-15mph. My best guess is W 10mph west of Viento, light/variable wind between Viento and Mosier, and light easterlies to the east. If something better happens, jump on it! River flow readings are 60-86kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 82F.

Relatively cooler air pools in the Columbia Basin on Sunday, and the heat low hovers along the west side of the Cascades. The day starts with E 20-25mph from Rooster to Viento. The wind holds until early afternoon and then drops to 15-20. Near Hood River, the wind will be very light easterly. To the east of The Dalles, you’ll find easterlies at 5-10mph in the afternoon. High temp: 85F. Monday starts with easterlies at 20-25 from Rooster to Viento. After noon, the wind starts to fade; you’ll find 15mph near Cascade Locks and 10mph near Rooster early to mid afternoon. Late afternoon: calm near Rooster and 10mph near Cascade Locks.

Westerlies return Tuesday afternoon. Our current forecast is gusty 21-24 for the Corridor executive session. Clouds and possibly rain arrive for the western Gorge on Wednesday. You’ll be heading east of The Dalles for a mid-20’s session. Wind strength predictions are subject to change as we get closer to Tuesday and Wednesday. Have a great weekend!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

It’s still dusty and dry! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
