Saturday. It’s Aug-une. Your tomatoes, peppers and tan lines will love the next three days.

It’s another gorgeous, sunny day here in the Gorge, and it’s going to look at lot like yesterday in terms of wind. Our gradients this morning were .06 (pdx-dls) and .01 (dls-psc), and the offshore high was still 1026, giving us .31 (eph-pdt). Our lovely little models are already behind the pace, suggesting no gradient first thing this morning, so I’ll bump up the forecast a little to outpace them. This suggests we’ll see 5-10 by late morning with a late afternoon push of 12-15 from Stevenson to Viento to Hood River, maybe to Mosier as well. Sites further east (with the exception of some early morning drainage wind at Doug’s and Rowena) will remain glassy. Or nearly-glassy. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off similar with glassy to light conditions depending on where you go. Expect yourself some 5-10 by late morning near Hood River with 16-19 mid-afternoon and 20-23 late in the afternoon. That afternoon wind tomorrow should fill in all the way from Stevenson out to Doug’s.

Monday looks a little windier than Sunday, with 10-13 early in the morning and 22-25 in the afternoon. Tuesday will likely be a lot like Monday. Wednesday, however, looks much different as a trough of low pressure moves inland, ramping up the wind into the mid to upper twenties, at least. I, sadly, have to be in Portland midday on Wednesday. I should probably send an email and see if I can change that… Thursday also looks super windy, and so does Friday, but you know how I feel about those long-range models…

Out on the coast, you shall find cooler temps and the following (north/central/south)… Today: 15-20/20-25/30-35, W 5′ @ 10 seconds. Tomorrow: 15-20/20-25/30-35, W 5′ @ 10. Monday: 20-25/25-30/30-35, W 3′ @ 11.

Random Morning Thoughts

As I get ready to go back to school, I’ve been thinking a lot about the cost of education and commuting to Portland. Worrying about this, of course, isn’t helping, because there’s not much I can do about it. Or is there? So often we worry about things and suffer because we feel like we don’t have control over the situation because we can’t change the big picture. Maybe we can’t change the big picture, but we can still create change.

If we think creatively, we can shift little things that will return at least a modicum of a sense of control to us. For example, there are credit cards that return 2% or more of what you spend. 2% is a lot. It’s the equivalent of getting a COLA on your paycheck. So, I switched my credit cards. And there are lots of other little things we can change. I like shopping at Fubonn when I’m in Portland rather than at our insanely expensive Hood River grocery stores, for example.

So, next time you have what seems to be an intractable problem (like $30,000 in school bills), look away from the problem and look at other things you can change. You’ll be surprised how much better you feel just making those little changes, and that just might get you started on the path to more comprehensive solutions.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Oh look: It’s SUNNY! It’s like spring out there today, only sunnier, 15-20 degrees warmer than normal, and my tomatoes are 3 feet taller than they should be on this date. Ok, it’s not like spring. It’s like f***ing August. It’s … Aug-une! Expect temps in the low 60’s this morning and low 90’s this afternoon. Light wind, no rainbows. Ditto on the temps and weather tomorrow with moderate wind in the afternoon. Monday looks exactly the same as Sunday. The big cooldown starts on Tuesday evening with temps dropping 15 degrees or so for Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

I can vouch that all the pavement east of Hood River is in good shape, because I rode it all yesterday. I can also let you know that there are U-pick cherries available in Mosier. On June 6th. Cherries. That’s insane. This weekend is the Bend Enduro race. I’m not sure what effect that will have here, but that’s on the calendar.

I love road biking, and if you’re reading this, you do too. The Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is the best. You’ll ride beautiful, remote, quiet, traffic-free roads. And you’ll do it with support, a nice touch for 50+ mile loops through the woods or farm country. Combine the loops to make a century route that gets most of the climbing done early. There’s also a short 11-mile Family Fun Ride. All proceeds support the Trout Lake schools, grange, and fire department.

Upcoming Events

In events today, the windsurfers will try and race at the Event Site, wind permitting. There’s a standup paddle race in Pine Hollow today, and that’s followed by the Pine Hollow Triathlon tomorrow. Closer to home, there’s pickleball at Westside Elementary in Hood River at 9:30, there’s the Tour de Chicken Coops from 11-2 – maps are $3 and are available at Grown Organic and Little Bit. You can check out some really cool coops, go home and build your own, and bring me eggs.

MMMM. Did I ever mention that I get the best eggs on the planet from my friend Denise? Well, I do. These eggs are AMAZING. The yolks are dark orange and delicious. And they come filled with good karma because the chickens are happy.

Speaking of happy, there’s a garden party (meal at 11, work party at 1, tea in the garden at 3) at Pacific Hermitage in White Salmon today. This is happy because monks tend to be happy, serene, content folks (not all of the time, but much of the time), and you can’t help but pick up on that if you are around them and other practitioners of mindfulness (I am not promoting a religion here, btw. Just mindfulness.)

Anson’s Bike Buddies will be collecting used bikes to fix up and give to local kids today. You can drop those bikes off between 10 and 3 at the Crates Building parking lot in The Dalles. If you don’t have a bike to donate, $25 is the average cost to fix up a bike and get it to a kid in need.

Coming up tomorrow, there are three community yoga classes, free or by donation. At 9am, there’s class at Yoga Samadhi and Crossfit Hood River. At 6pm, there’s class at Root Down Yoga.

Registration is now open for the summer Gorge Ultimate Frisbee league. It’s $40 for the summer. Click through to get signed up.

Have an awesome day today!
