Sunday. Aug-une: it’s 40 degrees warmer than June-uary.

DSCF0601
The Gorge has consistently been beating the model forecast for the last few days, with the models insisting on 13-16ish and the Gorge insisting on 16-19ish. We’re looking at a similar situation today, with gradients at .06 (pdx-dls), .02 (dls-psc) and .27 (eph-pdt). That will be enough for 16-19 this afternoon from Viento to the White Salmon sandbar with 12-15 this afternoon at Stevenson and the Mosier to Rowena stretches of the Columbia. Continued after the chart.

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

Things seem to change in my world at a fast pace. I’m not sure if it’s mach speed or warp speed, but it’s somewhere in there, probably mach speed, because we humans haven’t figured out warp drive yet. Anyway, sometimes I find myself wondering, “Who am I?” Am I a windsurfer, an athlete, a mediator, a student, a writer, a line cook, a house cleaner, a child, an adult, the Weather Girl?

One day I noticed that the common theme running through many of the answers to “Who am I?” is that I like to do things that help people out (like telling you where and when to find wind and snow). And that got me thinking that a different way to understand myself, and for us to understand ourselves, is to say “How do I want to be in the world?” Why bother? Because when we identify with “Who am I?”, our worlds can feel unbalanced and ungrounded when the answer to that question changes with little notice.

How do you want to be? Do you want to be kind, generous, thoughtful, self-protective, sociable, funny, sarcastic (lots of people seem to identify with that one when you look at online dating sites), anti-social, peaceful, warlike, righteous, open-minded… The list goes on.

If you have some time one day, make a list of the answers to “Who am I?” and see if there are common themes running through that tell you “How am I in the world?” You might learn something interesting. And if not, at least you’ll give the fine motor muscles in your hand a workout, and they need exercise too!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Aug-une continues today (Aug-une, if you’ve been wondering, is the opposite of June-uary) with temps in the mid 60’s early (open all your windows and doors right now to cool down your house) and highs in the mid 90’s this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks f**king hot, with temps in the mid 60’s early and the upper 90’s in the afternoon.

As best I can tell from looking on the graph at Hood River Weather, the record high tomorrow in Hood River is 93 degrees. That’s likely to fall. Back to the forecast, expect light to moderate wind and no rainbows tomorrow. Tuesday looks a little cooler: temps will be in the low 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I got a report from the 44 Road yesterday. The dirt up there is dry, but good, and not blown out and dusty. It’s about time for us to get some rain, but unfortunately, we’re not allowed to get any rain until after cherry harvest. Hey, at least that’ll happen really early this year. So much for cherry harvest on the 4th of July.

I love road biking, and if you’re reading this, you do too. The Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is the best. You’ll ride beautiful, remote, quiet, traffic-free roads. And you’ll do it with support, a nice touch for 50+ mile loops through the woods or farm country. Combine the loops to make a century route that gets most of the climbing done early. There’s also a short 11-mile Family Fun Ride. All proceeds support the Trout Lake schools, grange, and fire department.

Upcoming Events

In events news today, the Oregon Enduro Series race is happening in Bend, with lots of local riders competing. The Pine Hollow Triathlon is today, and we probably have a bunch of locals there too. If you’re sticking around, you have three community yoga classes, free or by donation, to choose from today. There are two at 9am, one at Crossfit Hood River and one at Yoga Samadhi. There’s another free yoga class tonight at Root Down at 6pm.

Other events today include pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School, open to everyone, even if you have no experience. There’s competitive ping pong at the Hood River armory from 5:30 to 8:30 tonight.

If you’re looking ahead to next weekend, there are two big windsurfing events. There’s a race at Hood River’s Event Site, and the Pistol River Wave Bash is happening in Gold Beach Thursday through Sunday.

Registration is now open for the summer Gorge Ultimate Frisbee league. It’s $40 for the summer. Click through to get signed up.

Have an awesome day today!
