SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! It’s Saturday, and another windy day is on tap. Lesser wind is in the cards on Sunday, and Monday’s likely to be the lightest of the next couple of weeks. Ensembles build the wind back up Tuesday and slowly add strength as we move into the latter half of next week. As of this morning, ensembles point at Thursday or Friday as having at least some potential to be The Cooldown You Were Looking For, but that’s a long ways out to place bets. We’ll keep an eye on it together!
It’s Saturday morning, and it was already breezy at 6am. Pressures were 30.12/30.04/29.99 to start the day with 1032mb offshore. As I was writing this (6am-ish), Stevenson and Rowena were 5-10mph, Viento 19mph, and the Hatch, Rufus, and Arlington 10-15mph. By mid morning, we’ll see 19-22mph from Viento to Hood River with Stevenson at 16-19mph and Mosier at 14-17mph. To the east: 10-13mph this morning with lighter wind the farther east you go.
This afternoon sees the Stevenson-Doug’s zone build to 22-25mph and hold into the evening. Avery and Rufus eventually build to 17-20mph. Keep in mind that this forecast predicts the iWind/iKite sensor readings. 17-20mph at Rufus/Arlington is not equal to 17-20mph at the Hatch. The Swell/Hatch sensor reads low, and those at The Wall/Maryhill/Arlington read high. So, 17-20mph at the Hatch is perhaps 23-26mph at Rufus. River flow over the last 24 hours was 100-137kcfs, river temp is 68.9F, and high temp forecast is 84F for Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Sunday starts out with at least a few marine clouds to the west, at least if you believe the Euro. That’s normally indicative of a solid west wind day, but models also insist that temps will equalize between the Gorge and the metro area. I think morning wind will beat the models. Let’s call it 14-17mph or perhaps even 17-20mph from Stevenson to the Hatch for a few hours in the morning. Hood River: 14-17mph. To the east: not much at all. As heat builds midday, the wind dips below 15mph. Thanks to hot weather in The Dalles late in the day, we could see 14-17mph return from Stevenson to Mosier. High temp: 90F in Hood River.
Models insist that Monday will be the lightest day of all thanks to hot weather on the west side. Early wind will be 13-16mph from Viento to the Hatch. By late morning, the wind falls below 10mph. In the afternoon, it returns at 13-16mph between Mosier and Doug’s but stays light everywhere else. High temp: 93F in Hood River.
Uncertainty builds as we move into Tuesday and Wednesday. Gorge wind depends in part on cross-Cascade temp gradients, and cloud cover affects those gradients. We are expecting quite a few clouds. Add in thunderstorm chances, and there’s a lot up in the air! So, it’s hard to make a precision forecast at this time; generally speaking, ensembles suggest we’ll have 17-20mph or more starting Tuesday and building as we get deeper into the week. As I mentioned earlier, models are hinting at Thursday or Friday being significantly windier. We’ll keep watching this as we try to pin it down. Have fun out there today. I’ll see you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! Warm, breezy weather starts the weekend for many of us. Starting Sunday, temps bump up and the wind drops down. Temps soar into the middle of next week, and the heat is joined (70% chance) by significant humidity starting Tuesday and persisting into Thursday. MUGGY! Depending on the track of a low pressure system, atmospheric instability increases may fire up Tuesday through Thursday and put us at risk of thunderstorms. Let’s cross our fingers for no thunderstorms โ we don’t need any more fire starts in the Pacific Northwest.
Glenwood and the Gorge this morning
Looking at Saturday morning… I woke up so early it was nearly dark! As of right now (5:43am), Glenwood was 42 degrees, the answer to Life, The Universe, And Everything. Elsewhere it was 47 (Parkdale) to the low 60s (lots of places). Everyone in Glenwood was perusing all the temps this morning and smugly smiling to each other at yet another cold-temp gold medal. Around the world in the places threatened by the current USA administration, it’s generally warmer than in Glenwood. Boy am I glad I’m not in Bandar-e Mahshahr today โ it’s super hot, muggy, and, oh, war crimes are being committed in the form of targeting of civilian infrastructure. SAD:
Our friends around the world today
Bandar-e Mahshahr, Iran: 108, sunny, 27% humidity
Havana, Cuba: 84, partly cloudy, 78% humidity
Muscat, Oman: 86, sunny, 76% humidity
Caracas, Venezuela: 72, partly cloudy, 83% humidity
Nuuk, Greenland: 50, rainy, 90% humidity
Gaza City: 87, sunny, 62% humidity
Ottawa, Canada: 65, cloudy, 60% humidity
Saturday’s Gorge weather forecast
Here in the Gorge, it’s a sunny start. Webcams show clear sky in the metro area too. Clear sky sticks around all day. Afternoon temps rise to 81 in Stevenson, 84 in Hood River, 90 in The Dalles, and 95 in Pasco. West wind builds to 20-25mph between Stevenson in The Dalles by early afternoon with 15-20mph east of The Dalles to Rufus later in the day.
Sunday’s Gorge weather forecast
A few low clouds arrive west of Hood River sometime Saturday night, so you folks start Sunday cloudy. Everyone else: sunny to start. In the afternoon, some high clouds swing up from the south and add some color to the sunset. Morning temps range from 50-60. Afternoon temps: 87/90/96/94. You might have noticed the big jump in temps over Saturday? That’ll result in less wind too โ we’re expecting 15mph or so west of Lyle with light wind east of Lyle all day.
Monday’s Gorge weather forecast
Increasing humidity along the Nch’i Wana (Columbia River) leads to a warmer, stickier start on Monday โ 60+ degrees many places. Head up in elevation for less-moist air and lower temps and better Sunday night sleeping weather. We’ll have a mix of mid and high clouds to start. Ditto to finish. Afternoon highs: 92/93/98/96. Wind will be under 15mph all day and confined to areas west of The Dalles.
Extended Gorge weather forecast
Hot, muggy weather persists on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both days call for highs in the triple digits in The Dalles with 95+ elsewhere in the lowlands. Actual outcomes will depend on cloud cover โ clouds will temper the heat. Clouds, however, are a sign of humidity. Ensembles currently have a 70% chance or so of significant mugginess Tuesday through Thursday. If this plays out, we’re also at risk of thunderstorms, which is NOT what we want right now. Late in the week, conditions stabilize, humidity lowers, and temps drop closer to normal. That’s all I have for you now. Safe travels. -TATAS
