Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

A dumping snowstorm is on tap for the 24 hour period known as Saturday – up to two feet of snow is forecast to fall on Mt. Hood by Sunday morning. Another round of snow is forecast for Sunday night, and then it’s dry, clear, and sunny for the next four or five days!

For Saturday, expect lots of snow all day, and lots of snow overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. It’s possible there will be a short period of alternating rain/snow, or more likely wet snow, between 4pm and 7pm tonight as 5000′ temps rise to 0-2C. During the day, we’ll get 0.9” water value (WV), for 7-9” of middle-quality snow. Overnight, another 1.2” WV falls. Expect it to be heavy and dense at first, becoming increasingly powdery overnight. Approximately 9-12” will fall. Wind will be W 30 early, W 40 in the afternoon, and WNW 30 overnight. That’s storm skiing, in case you were wondering!

Sunday starts out partly cloudy with scattered flurries, turns sunny, and then sees the snow pick up again in the evening. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 1500′ in the evening, and 1000′ after midnight. Just a trace falls during the day. About 0.6” WV falls as dry powder, 6-7” of it, overnight. Wind will be WNW 30 in the morning and NW 25-30 from late morning on through Sunday night.

Monday starts out with scattered flurries and turns sunny. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. UP to 1” of new snow will fall before the sky clears. Wind: :NW 25 early, NNW 15 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight. After that… three to five days of dry, sunny weather on the mountain!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light to moderate westerlies Saturday morning stick around for many areas today as weather systems move through. We’ll have gusty 20-25 west of Swell all day with rain. The day starts with 5-10 east of The Dalles and picks up to gusty 18-22. The central Gorge sticks with “light wind” all day long. Sunday starts with post-frontal west wind at 12-15 through the whole Gorge. Afternoon: 12-15 in the west and relatively steady, but chilly, 23-26 from The Dalles to Arlington. Monday starts with 11-14 and stays that way all day long. Expect widespread easterlies (and colder weather) at 15-20 on Tuesday through the entire Gorge.

Cycling

Syncline is going to be good today, and rumors have it that the upper regions of Post Canyon (behind the closed road gates) are also good. That is, they will be until pouring rain arrives today! Head east of Moiser for gravel grinding and road biking, and you should find some enjoyable conditions.
