Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Multiple feet of fresh powder remain in the forecast for the next 48 hours. With strong W and NW flow predicted along with about 4” water value (WV), Mt. Hood is set for 3-5 feet of snow over the next couple of days. If you’re going up, stay away from tree wells and ride with partner. Also, bring a shovel, or you will have a very hard time getting out of the resort parking lots.

For Saturday, strong wind and dumping snowfall is the call. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. About 1.7” WV is forecast during the day, for 17-20” of new snow. Another 1.0” WV arrives overnight, for 10-12” more. Wind will be WNW 50 in the morning, NW 50 in the afternoon, and W 40 overnight. Those daytime wind speeds could affect lift operations. They could also impact snow quality. Expect a mix of powder, wind-affected or wind-packed snow, and areas of sastrugi.

The fun continues on Sunday with piles of powder. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 2500′ midday, 500′ in the evening, and 0-500′ overnight, depending on when cold air arrives from Canada. Snowfall: 1.5” WV is forecast during the day. Call it 14-17” of new regular old snow bordering on fluffy powder. Another 0.8” WV is forecast overnight. With colder temps, that’ll be champagne powder. Wind will be W 40 during the day, enough to redistribute snow, but probably not enough to ruin the quality. The wind ramps up to W 50 in the evening, W 45 late, and W 55 after midnight. That will affect the snow quality for Monday morning.

Sunbreaks looks possible on Monday, but there may be fog up to 6000′. Higher lifts are probably going to remain buried, so forget about Cascade and maybe the Mile. The snow level on Monday will be 0-500′, probably closer to zero. Just 0.1” WV falls during the day, for an inch of new. Overnight snowfall depends on the track of an incoming low. Let’s look a little closer at Monday night – models disagree with the path of this system. The GFS keeps it well south, but the ECMWF takes it closer to central Oregon. If it stays south, there won’t be any snow on Mt. Hood. If it tracks north, a few inches are possible. Wind will be W 55 early (watch for lift troubles with that), W 30 in the afternoon (no problem), and NW 20 overnight.

Temps plummet on Monday night, setting us up for teens and sunshine Tuesday morning followed by high clouds in the afternoon. Snowy weather returns on Wednesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

The setup for a giant west wind day doesn’t get much better than today, Saturday. A deep low pressure system moves inland along the Canadian border and strong high pressure builds offshore. Expect the wind to pick up to 35-45 from Stevenson to Boardman by mid-morning. Rain in the west will make the wind extremely gusty. Head east for the best results. River flow is 110kcfs and temp is 42 degrees. Please have a partner, and keep them in sight. Sunday starts with light westerlies. The wind picks up early afternoon to gusty 28-33 everywhere, rising to 30-35 around sunset. Monday starts with gusty westerlies at 15-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. The wind turns light in the afternoon, and switches to widespread E 15-25 overnight.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.
