Mt. Hood Forecast

Sunshine on Saturday morning gives way to high clouds. Sunday will be cloudy all day, as will Monday. Drizzle or mist Monday daytime turns to rain overnight. After that: two days of Pineapples.

Looking more closely at Saturday, we have to turn away and grab sunglasses for the morning sunshine! High clouds move in late morning or early afternoon and deepen overnight. The free air freezing level will be 500′ early and will rise to 5000′ in the afternoon. Wind: light and variable in the morning, WSW 10-15 in the afternoon, and SW 20-40 overnight.

Sunday brings very light snow flurries during the day with periods of just-cloudy weather. Same overnight. The snow level will be 5000′ in the morning. It falls to 3500′ in the afternoon and stays there. Just 0.1” water equivalent (WE) falls during the day, for up to 1” of snow. A trace is all the mountain gets overnight. Wind: SW 20-40 in the morning, SW 10-25 in the afternoon, and SW 20-40 overnight.

Light mixed precip or drizzle or perhaps wet snow moves in Monday morning. However it starts, it’ll be drizzle or mist by the afternoon. The snow level will be 3500′ before dawn, 5500′ when the precip arrives, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ after midnight. As of today, it appears we’ll have just a trace of rain during the day and just 0.2” overnight. Wind: SW 20-40 early, WSW 30-40 midday, SW 10-25 in the evening, and SW 30-65 overnight.

Moderate to heavy rain is in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday as an atmospheric river flows into the West Coast. Details aren’t clear. What is clear is that the snow level will rise as high as 9000′ on Wednesday. Mountain temps will climb near 40, and valley temps will climb into the mid 50’s. That’s mighty warm for this time of year! Remember, skiing in the rain is fun too – the snow can be wet and consistent and quite fun!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
