Mt. Hood Forecast

Snow flurries this morning fade in the afternoon and lead to a dry night. Saturday: dry and at least partly sunny. Light snow Sunday and Monday will be followed by… drum roll… another round of warm rain, most likely.

For Friday, expect light snowfall until early afternoon followed by flurries and then clear sky filled with stars tonight. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the evening, and the freezing level will fall to 0′ overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast in the morning, for 2-3” of snow. Just a trace more falls in the afternoon before the sky clears. Wind: WSW 20-35 early, WNW 25-30 in the afternoon, NW 25-30 in the evening, and LTW after midnight.

Saturday looks clear with temps warming during the day. High clouds move in during the afternoon, and light snow moves in overnight. The freezing level will be 0′ in the morning. Temps rise to 31-33F at 5000′ in the afternoon. Overnight, the snow level will be 5000′-6000′. No precip during the day. About 0.1” WE is forecast overnight. That’ll probably be wet to very wet snow, but could also be drizzle at 5000′ and lower. Wind: light and variable in the morning, SW 5-15 in the afternoon, WSW 20-30 overnight.

Light snow or rain on Sunday morning transitions to mostly cloudy and/or foggy conditions during the day with a trace of rain switching to snow overnight. The snow level will be 5000′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast during the day, probably as wet snow. A trace is forecast overnight – that’s flurries switching to sprinkles. Wind: WSW 20-30 early, SW 10-30 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon and overnight.

As of now, it looks like we’ll see a trace of snow during the day on Monday. On Monday night, the Pineapple Express arrives. The snow level shoots up to 9500′ by Tuesday with moderate rain. The track and intensity of this system could still change, but the general picture is there in about 60-70% of the ensemble members. Well… at least the groom is fast and consistent in the rain!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
