Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

A wild weather Saturday is on tap for Mt. Hood with rain, snow, and strong wind. Colder, mellower conditions followed through Tuesday morning. By midday Tuesday, we’ll be back in the storm cycle with super-strong wind and dumping rain. It appears this atmospheric river may stick around through Thursday with 5000′ temps hovering between 0C and 4C… right on the edge for snow.

Let’s start with Saturday: morning rain switches to snow around 10am. There’s a chance of a clear period in the afternoon followed by another round of light snowfall tonight. The snow level will be 7000′ early, 5000′ around 10am, 2500′ in the afternoon, and will fall to 500′ or so overnight. About 1.5” water value (WV) falls during the day, most likely as 1.0” rain and 0.5” WV snow, for 2-5” of heavy new. Another 0.2” WV falls overnight, for 2-3” of fluffy powder. Wind could be problematic: WSW 65 early, W 55-60 (definitely problematic) mid-morning, WSW 60 in the afternoon, W 35 in the evening, and WNW 15 after midnight. Expect wind to affect lift operations today. Total shutdown? Not sure.

Sunday brings light snowfall with a partly cloudy period midday and light snow overnight. The snow level will be 500′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and down to the surface overnight. About 0.2” WV falls during the day, for 2-3” of powder. Another 0.2” WV falls overnight, for 2-3” more. Wind will be WNW 15-20 early, light westerly in the afternoon, and NW 25-30 overnight.

Monday looks clear, cold and sunny. The free air freezing level will be 0′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. No precip. Mountain temps in the teens. Wind: NW 25-30 early, NW 10 in the afternoon, NW 20-25 overnight.

“Interesting” weather returns on Tuesday as an afternoon warm front taps into an atmospheric river along with a strong NW jet. The snow level will be 0′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ in the evening and overnight. It’s hard to tell when the snow will switch to rain, but it currently looks like we could see 8-12” snow before the switch. Wind will be NW20 in the morning, 30-35 in the afternoon, and NW 65 after midnight. If we look at Wednesday, we see heavy rain with 50-60mph NW wind. That’s a sure-fire mountain shutdown. Enjoy the excitement.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A strong cold front combines with offshore high pressure on Saturday for a warm round of strong and gusty westerlies. Morning wind will be gusty 20-35 in the far west with E 5-10 out east. By mid-morning, the wind will pick up to gusty 25-30 from Rowena to Arlington (also near Stevenson and Viento) with 13-16 in the central Gorge. Swell to Mosier will join late morning or early afternoon, but will likely be in the gusty 20-25 range. Sunday brings W 7-10 all day through the whole Gorge if you believe the models. Offshore high pressure suggests the wind will pick up to gusty 14-17 from Swell to The Dalles. Monday starts with gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles. It looks like the wind will back off to 13-16 in the afternoon.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clouds and drizzle in the morning become moderate rain through 1pm and then sprinkles. Snow flurries fall overnight with just a trace accumulating. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and low 50’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Scattered flurries on Sunday morning give way to sunshine. Temps will be near 30 early and near 40 later (a 20 degree drop from Saturday!). Light west wind. No rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy to start and sunny or partly cloudy in the afternoon. Dry all day. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and low 40’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Road and Mountain Biking

It’s snowy or muddy on all the trails now. Please leave them alone so you don’t do damage. The only exception may be the lower parts of Syncline, but they are probably muddy enough that you will do damage too. Think about gravel or road biking today, as temps should make it into the upper 40’s with just-sprinkles falling from the sky.
