The Forecast

CoronaChat

Hello and happy Monday! I think it’s Monday, anyway, but I keep losing track! Anyway, I saw something really beautiful yesterday, and it’s directly related to the coronavirus. Lots of outdoor recreation is inaccessible for various reasons right now. Roads, both paved and gravel, are still open.

I went for a road bike ride mid-afternoon around Hood River Valley. So many people on bikes! Kids on bikes. Old folks on bikes. MAMILs (middle aged men in Lycra) on bikes. Everyone looked super-duper happy to be out cycling enjoying what was actually a rather cloudy, gloomy day. It wasn’t just bikes – there were walkers and joggers and equestrians too. And yes, almost everyone was social distancing.

Never, ever have I seen so many people out and about enjoying the things we do have instead of ruminating on the things we don’t. I felt inspired and happy and grateful. I’m gonna recommend that you check it out too and see if you find some joy in this situation.

Now, not everyone has bikes. But true cyclists have many bikes. So, if you have plenty of bikes, maybe you can loan one to someone who doesn’t. It’s going to be a gorgeous, sunny week. Get out there and enjoy it in the ways and places you still can. #stayhomesavegrandma

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

All the mountains are closed, the forest is closed, and neither in-bounds nor out-of-bounds snowsports are available at this time. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Take a look at this sobering article about a recent BC rescue and consider carefully if you want to put others at risk. Remember, Timberline, Skibowl, and Meadows are all closed to uphill traffic at this time. This is to comply with Kate Brown’s executive orders. It’s the law, folks. Obey it!

It’s getting close to the time of year when the snow forecast ends. For now, tho, I need those freezing levels for other things, so it shall continue. Not much to say this week – warm and sunny. For Monday, expect a sunny day up there with some scattered high clouds. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 5000′ all day and will climb to 8000′ overnight. Wind: W 10 in the morning, NW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 overnight.

Tuesday also looks sunny. The FAF will be 8000′ early, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. Wind: NW 20-25 in the morning, 10-15 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight. Wednesday: sunny and clear and warm. The FAF will be 5500′ in the morning and will rise to 10,000′ in the afternoon. Wind: light and variable all day. Sunshine and the 10,000′ FAF stick around through Friday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

First, a public service announcement. All Oregon and Washington State Parks are closed at this time. All Port of Hood River waterfront access is closed at this time, although the walking path is open. The Army Corps has closed all parks. They have also closed boat ramps. Swell City is also closed. I’m honestly not sure what that leaves open or not, but here’s your wind forecast.

For Monday, we start light and variable with light west gradients. By the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 12-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. Mosier to Doug’s climbs to 19-23. Tuesday looks like a solid westerly setup as offshore high pressure combines with warmth in the desert. Morning westerlies start chilly (39F) at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier. By late morning, we’ll have 25-29 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Wednesday morning starts light and variable. While models are predicting light east wind, it seems more likely that we’ll see light westerlies. Thursday: moderate westerlies. Friday: moderate to strong.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Cycling

ALL trails in the Gorge are closed as of today. Hood River County (Post Canyon, Pinemont), SDS (Underwood, Whoopdee), and Kreps (Hospital Hill) lands are closed as of today to prevent the spread of coronavirus. There were two considerations: protecting medical professionals, and keeping crowds away when the weather climbs into the 60’s, maybe 70, next week. Please, please respect the closures.
