The Forecast

CoronaChat

Happy Sunday morning, folks! As you probably know, all the local trails are now closed. Sadly, I saw evidence on Strava of people riding yesterday. I’ve also seen several people say online that they plan to continue riding on Kreps or Hood River County land despite the closures.

It’s frustrating when you can’t access your favorite recreation spots. I hear ya. But saying you’re going to violate legal orders because you want to keep riding or because there won’t be anyone out there enforcing this ruling… wow… I’m not sure how to respond to this.

I guess I will just speak directly to these folks. I feel disappointed in you, and I’m angry at you. Literally billions of other people are doing everything possible to slow the spread of this illness. The elderly, the vulnerable, our medical professionals, and all the other “essential” workers deserve our cooperation.

You have fancy bikes, hiking boots, skis, and you can’t sacrifice the next few weeks or months on the trails? Some people have to sacrifice going to the grocery store. Some people don’t have enough to eat. We’re all doing our best to save your grandma, your grandpa, and you from this disease. And you’re going to ignore the government’s best efforts to stop it because you want to ride dirt?

Come on. Reconsider. See if there’s something positive you can get from knowing that you’re doing everything you can to slow the spread of coronavirus. Sacrificing the things you love brings up difficult emotions, sure. But you can tolerate those, I promise. We’re in this together. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Thank you for listening and thinking deeply about your choices.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

All the mountains are closed, the forest is closed, and neither in-bounds nor out-of-bounds snowsports are available at this time. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Take a look at this sobering article about a recent BC rescue and consider carefully if you want to put others at risk. Remember, Timberline, Skibowl, and Meadows are all closed to uphill traffic at this time. This is to comply with Kate Brown’s executive orders. It’s the law, folks. Obey it!

It’s a cloudy day in the mountains today (it’s Sunday). Light snow will fall today, but that’s it for the week; warm, sunny weather is on the way all the way through Friday! For Sunday, expect light flurries this morning and a few scattered snowflakes in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 2000′ this morning, 5000′ this afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. Just a trace of snow falls. Wind: SE 10 in the morning, SW 15-20 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Monday starts with some 9000′ or-so clouds and turns clear. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 5500′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: W 10-15 early, NW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 overnight. Tuesday looks sunny and above freezing. The FAF will be 7000′ all day. Wind: NW 20-25 early, NNW 10-15 in the afternoon, and light-and-variable overnight. Sunshine continues along with warmer weather for Thursday and Friday. It appears we may see some precip over next weekend.

Gorge Wind Forecast

First, a public service announcement. All Oregon and Washington State Parks are closed at this time. All Port of Hood River waterfront access is closed at this time. The Army Corps has closed all parks. They have also closed boat ramps. Swell City is also closed. This is an order to obey. It’s not one to sneak around and find a way to get on the river instead. That’s especially for you locals – set a good example so you don’t have folks coming down here from Covid-19 epicenters to play on the river and shop at our stores.

Sunday brings easterlies: 20-25 this morning near Rooster with 15-20 near Stevenson. By midday, the wind should fade to 5-10, dying off to light easterlies or just calm wind in the afternoon. Monday starts with W 7-10 everywhere. In the afternoon, the wind picks up to 12-15 in the west and 20-23 from Rowena to Arlington. Tuesday starts with 20-23 from Viento to Mosier and picks up to 24-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Cycling

ALL trails in the Gorge are closed as of today. Hood River County (Post Canyon, Pinemont), SDS (Underwood, Whoopdee), and Kreps (Hospital Hill) lands are closed as of today to prevent the spread of coronavirus. There were two considerations: protecting medical professionals, and keeping crowds away when the weather climbs into the 60’s, maybe 70, next week. Please, please respect the closures.
