Tuesday: sunshine and warm weather. =)

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when the mountains and beaches are closed? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider subscribing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to subscribe? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $12.34 or more gets you a subscription. Click below to subscribe. Thank you!!

The Forecast

CoronaChat

Hey people, it’s working. All this social distancing and isolating is flattening the curve in Oregon and Washington. While there’s certainly a lot of unreported community transmission (lack of testing and the 30% false negative rate of tests isn’t helping), the transmission rate has slowed and the number of new cases (in Oregon, anyway) is holding steady. Good work!

(And if you need testing, One Community Health has stepped up and is testing basically all comers. The antibody test, for those of us who suspect we’ve already had this illness, is not yet ready.)

So, as much as this near-lockdown is hard on you. Take heart. You’re saving lives, perhaps the lives of your friends who work in healthcare, your store checker, the folks who swapped out your snow tires (no line at Point S yesterday), and everyone else who isn’t allowed to socially distance. Keep it up! #stayhomesavegrandpa

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

All the mountains are closed, the forest is closed, and neither in-bounds nor out-of-bounds snowsports are available at this time. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Take a look at this sobering article about a recent BC rescue and consider carefully if you want to put others at risk. Remember, Timberline, Skibowl, and Meadows are all closed to uphill traffic at this time. This is to comply with Kate Brown’s executive orders. It’s the law, folks. Obey it!

Mountain weather: sunny and dry all week long. For Tuesday, you’ll find high clouds early and sunshine later. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 7000′. Wind: NNW 15 early, NW 10 in the afternoon, and N 10 overnight. Wednesday: SUNSHINE! FAF of 7000′ early and 11,000′ in the afternoon. Wind: N 10 early, NE 5 later, N 10 overnight. Thursday: Sunny all day and star-filled overnight. FAF: 11,000′. Wind: N 10 in the morning, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, NNW 20-25 overnight. Ditto Friday. Clouds move in in Saturday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

First, a public service announcement. All Oregon and Washington State Parks are closed at this time. All Port of Hood River waterfront access is closed at this time, although the walking path is open. The Army Corps has closed all parks. They have also closed boat ramps. Swell City is also closed. I’m honestly not sure what that leaves open or not, but here’s your wind forecast.

This morning’s gradients bode well for wind today. 0.12 and 0.06 were the readings at 7am, and the wind was in the low 20’s from Viento to Arlington. We’ll see the wind build along with the temps. By early afternoon, we should be seeing 24-28 from Viento to Moiser. By mid-afternoon, that wind should extend all the way from sunny Stevenson to sunny The Dalles. East of there: 18-22 this morning and 10-13ish this afternoon. River flow is still quite low: 118kcfs. Temp is 46 degrees. If you’re going to get on the water, please do it with an abundance of caution. Keep your effort and tricks at 50% and your focus at 100%. Now is not the time to get injured.

Wednesday’s a little tricky. Offshore high pressure looks stronger than inland high pressure, but models predict easterlies at 15-20 late morning. Near Hood River and east of there, the wind will be light all day. Let’s go with those easterlies for Rooster to Stevenson. Thursday starts out calm. Models are likely underestimating the wind; they think it’ll stay light all day. I think it’ll build to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River, maybe to Mosier, in the afternoon as thermals kick in. Models then coalesce around mid 20’s for Friday.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Some high clouds around the region this morning should go away this afternoon. Sun remains. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and near 60 later. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low-mid 30’s early and upper 60’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Thursday looks sunny. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 70’s (YES) in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Next chance of any precip: Sunday, but not much of a chance.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Cycling

ALL trails in the Gorge are closed.. Hood River County (Post Canyon, Pinemont), SDS (Underwood, Whoopdee), and Kreps (Hospital Hill) lands are closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus by incoming hoards of visitors. DNR land (Nestor) is closed per the DNR website and a little tiny sign at the bottom of the Nestor trail. USFS (44 Road trails, Syncline) are closed. State Parks (Columbia Hills) are closed. There were two considerations: protecting medical professionals, and keeping crowds away when the weather is nice. Google Sun Valley’s Covid-19 rate if your are curious what crowds of recreation visitors can do to spread coronavirus.
