Gorge Wind Forecast

Things are looking up for the next several days – we have three out of the next four days with solid westerlies. Even on Tuesday, when there won’t be much wind at all, there might be just enough in the evening for foil sports.

Monday starts with clouds well past Hood River. Don’t despair – they’re going to burn off and leave the Corridor in full-on sunshine by late morning. Between now and then, you’ll find inconsistent westerlies that jump around between the low double digits and the low 20’s. By late morning or early afternoon, the wind will settle in for the day. Best results will be found between Viento and Doug’s where the wind tops out at 25-29. Stevenson will be a bit later to start and a bit lighter: 20-24. Rufus (which has too much current) will be 13-16 (although, now that I think of it, it’s likely to outperform models today), and areas east of there max out at 10-13 or so. River flow is 376-437kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 73F.

High pressure pushes inland on Tuesday and a heat low slides up the coast. Light westerlies start the day, but the wind quickly goes calm for much for the day. In the mid to late afternoon time frame, westerlies pick up to 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier. High temp: 82F under clear sky.

A low moves in to BC on Wednesday, and high pressure holds off the coast. Temps soar in central Oregon and east of the Cascades resulting in a pressure drop in the desert. Westerlies start at 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier with calm wind to the east. It’ll be a slow and steady build. Time your session for the wind speed that suits your fancy. By the afternoon, westerlies pick up to 25-28 from Stevenson to Avery with 22-25 at Rufus. Late in the day, Arlington and Roosevelt join at 13-16.

Models suggest a nuker of a Dawn Patrol on Thursday. Get it early if that’s your thing, because (as of now anyway), the wind is forecast to drop to the low-mid 20’s by late morning. As of today, the Friday-Sunday stretch looks hot and dry with light easterlies. Don’t forget that the Hood River Bridge will be closed from Friday to Sunday for repairs to the on/off ramps. After the 90-something temps this weekend, we’ll be looking for the Big Cooldown Day next week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! All the 44 Road trails are open. Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open, but Ape Canyon trail has received no maintenance this year. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
