Gorge Wind Forecast

A decent three-day stretch of westerlies gives way to a weekend of hot, sunny east wind. Do not despair. You won’t have the swell, but you’ll still be getting on the water. And hey, an easterly downwinder with strong current is a rare treat. Don’t forget that the Hood River Bridge will be closed all weekend, so you’ll have to get creative if you want to play with your friends who live on the opposite side of the Columbia.

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll have noticed that I’m implying today will be windy after all. Indeed, models have upped the ante from yesterday’s forecast of a measly 11-14 only late afternoon to the upper teens from early afternoon on. Viento will be in the 14-17 range to start, and Swell will hover at 11-14. The wind will dip for a few hours, but it should return to 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River by noon. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 15-18ish from Stevenson to The Dalles with light/variable wind east of The Dalles. River flow is 373-433kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 81F.

Wednesday picks up a decent marine layer over the western half of Oregon. Sunshine takes the desert to the mid-80’s, while the metro area stays in the mid 70’s. A system moves inland to the north, and high pressure holds offshore. Setup: good. Early morning wind will be 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. Late morning: 17-21 from Stevenson to Doug’s. After that, it’s a quick build to 24-28 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 at Rufus by early afternoon. If you hold on a little longer, the wind will build to 20-23 between Avery and Arlington and hold at 24-28 from Stevenson to Doug’s. High temp: 80F.

Wind models for Thursday show quite a bit of spread in predicted strengths, so it’s a bit hard to make a call. The deterministic GFS suggests 20-23mph or so focused west of The Dalles. That said, models suggest anything from single digits to 30’s, so we’ll have to wait and see. The picture is clear for Friday through Sunday: easterlies and hot weather. While you won’t be catching big swell on an easterly downwinder, you will be enjoying beautiful views and a high rate of speed. So, why not?

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! All the 44 Road trails are open. Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open, but Ape Canyon trail has received no maintenance this year. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
