Gorge Wind Forecast

Finally, finally, after a long and chilly spring, the Gorge is tumbling into summer. Warmer weather is forecast starting Monday, and westerlies of some sort are predicted almost every day this upcoming week. Notable exception: Tuesday, when the wind will be calm most of the day.

Sunday starts with marine clouds to Hood River and a forecast of drizzle for the far western Gorge all day thanks to an incoming disturbance. Westerlies started the day in the mid teens most locations with a few (Hood River, for example) in the single digits. With clouds sticking around in the west all day, the focus will be Mosier eastward. Late morning wind will be 13-16 from Lyle to Rufus (where there’s still an awful lot of current). Early afternoon: 19-22 from Mosier to Arlington. Mid afternoon: 23-26 from Mosier to Arlington. Areas west of Mosier will hover in the 10-13 range this morning and pick up to gusty 17-20 mid-afternoon. Stevenson will be dealing with mostly cloudy sky all day today and will probably stay in the low to mid teens. River flow is 361-437kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 68F.

Monday sees a rather stable weather pattern. Offshore high pressure strengthens to 1032mb and tilts a bit positive. The day starts partly cloudy in Hood River and turns sunny. Dawn patrol kicks off with 20-23 from Avery to Boardman with 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Don’t drive to the desert, because the wind will die off out there. Wait until late morning, and you’ll find 21-24+ from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 east of Mosier. This is a corridor-friendly and all-day-friendly setup. High temp: 72F.

High pressure pushes inland on Tuesday. Very little wind is expected for most of the day. A little push in the evening takes the westerlies to 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River or potentially to Mosier. Tuesday’s high temp maxes out in the low 80’s. Models are currently suggesting a return to stronger westerlies on Wednesday and Thursday. Don’t forget that the Hood River Bridge will be closed next Friday through Sunday. Have a great week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

It seems likely that Post is too wet to ride. Surveyor’s and Dog River are open. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
