Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Friday morning, TGIF, and our expected marine push, as so often has happened this year, is less than expected. That’s going to shift the wind farther west than yesterday’s forecast suggested. Wherever it is, you’ll want to get it. Light easterlies are all we’ll have this weekend with a slight chance for sport-worthy east wind on Sunday.

Friday starts with pressures of 30.11/30.02/29.98 for gradients of 0.09 (pdx-dls) and 0.04 (dls-psc). Marine clouds are piled up to the west of Hood River, and various higher-level clouds are present too as a cold front sweeps inland. Not ideal. Westerlies start in the 17-21 range from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 at Stevenson, 5-10 most other places and 17-20 near Maryhill. The wind rises to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles this morning with 20-23 at Rufus, which seems poised to outperform the models today. Afternoon westerlies settle in at gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 20-23+ at Rufus and 13-16 at Arlington. River flow readings this morning were 64-78kcfs, river temp is 68F, and high temp forecast is a miserly 67F for Hood River.

A trough settles inland on Saturday, and a low transits southward well offshore. Translation into wind forecast language: definitely not ideal! The day starts calm, may pick up to E 10mph from Rooster to Viento, and then goes calm again in the afternoon. High temp: 67F. Sunday looks slightly windier, but intermittent showers will impact wind quality. Your best shot at wind is midday when easterlies are possible. You may find 15-20mph near Rooster Rock and 10-15mph near Stevenson and Viento. That’s marginal, but may be just enough for some of you and your foils!

After the weekend, models start to disagree on the overall pattern. Generally speaking, Monday and Tuesday look too light for windsports. Let’s leave it there for now. Enjoy your day on the river today!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! This weekend is the Pacific Hermitage Pah Bah at the Underwood Community Center. There’s a free half-day meditation retreat from 1-5pm on Saturday. Sunday involves a fabulous potluck and the alms-giving ceremony.

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
