Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Westerlies return today and stick around through the middle of next week. While the models are clear that westerlies will return, smoke could impact forecast reliability this week – smoke can reduce high temps, and reduced high temps in the desert would result in less wind. Air quality may be an issue east of Mosier as well. You can check out the smoke forecast or look at the ODOT cams to see what you might encounter in the eastern Gorge.

Thursday started with pressures of 29.95/29.91/29.90 for gradients of 0.04/0.01. The wind was mostly dead calm, but Viento was reading 15mph at dawn. We’ll see a slow build today. By late morning or early afternoon, the Stevenson-Mosier zone builds to 17-20mph. Afternoon wind is likely to dip to 14-17mph from Stevenson to Hood River. Mosier to Doug’s builds to 17-20mph this afternoon. Models are 50/50 on Rufus building to 17-20mph late in the day; given smoke out east and the lack of thermal support, it seems unlikely. River flow over the last 24 hours was 102-152kcfs, river temp is 71.1F, and high temp forecast is 94F for Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Standard-issue Gorge summer weather pattern settles in on Friday: offshore high pressure, heat low in the desert, west wind… Only thing lacking is a marine layer; the lack will result in the Corridor (Viento to Hood River) dropping off in the afternoon, aka “midday lull”. Early westerlies will be 21-24mph between Viento and Hood River with 12-15mph east of Hood River to Arlington as well as at Stevenson. Midday westerlies build to 22-25mph between Stevenson and Doug’s and eventually fill in at Rufus. For the afternoon, we’re looking at gusty 19-22mph from Stevenson to Hood River and 24-28mph from Mosier to Rufus with 22-25mph at Arlington. Highs: 91 in Hood River and 98 in the desert.

Another windy day is forecast on Saturday. We won’t have any marine layer support (again), which means the best Corridor (Viento to Hood River) conditions will be in the morning. Early wind will be 21-24mph from Viento to Hood River with 17-20mph at Mosier and 10-13mph near Rowena. By late morning, westerlies rise to 20-23mph at Stevenson and Mosier and 23-26mph between Viento and Hood River. Afternoon: gusty 19-22mph from Stevenson to Hood Riiver with 25-28mph from Mosier to Rufus and 11-14mph at Arlington.

Somewhat lighter wind is forecast on Sunday – 19-22mph from Stevenson to Mosier. The Rowena area may join in the afternoon. On Monday, we’re looking at 17-20mph to start and 22-25mph late in the day, strongest from Stevenson to Mosier. The Euro ensemble suggests slightly stronger wind Tuesday and Wednesday as temps continue to slide a couple degrees each day on the west side. Starting Thursday, uncertainty spikes. Warmer, less-windy weather is the likely outcome. I’ll be gone Sunday for a week and totally offline, so you will have to get some time on the river for me all those days!
