Gorge Wind Forecast

Ideal weather for the Gorge is offshore high pressure with a heat low in the desert, but other things can make the wind go too. That’s what we’ll see for the next several days – a series of weather systems will swing through the Northwest giving us periods of west wind. It’s worth saying that progressive weather like this tends to result in day-to-day changes in the forecast. Hold anything beyond 24 hours lightly.

For Friday, morning gradients were .07 and .01. A low to the east of us keeps things rolling. The day starts with 12-15 from Viento to Swell with 5-10 to Rowena and also near Stevenson. Variable wind starts the day in the desert. As the low settles east of the Cascades later, westerlies pick up to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus with 12-15 farther east. Portland’s afternoon clearing will likely result in the wind dropping at Swell mid afternoon, perhaps down to 18-22.

Saturday starts out mellow and ends up interesting as an approaching system destabilizes things and also results in big afternoon gradients. This setup results in unexpected super-strong wind about 50% of the time. So… morning wind will be 12-15 from Viento to Hood River with light westerlies to the west and light and variable wind to the east. Good for fishing, for sure. By late morning, the wind rises to 20-23 from Viento to Mosier. From there, it’s all up: 27-31+ in the afternoon from Stevenson to Avery with a chance of 30-35 late in the day. Roosevelt and Rufus join the fun mid-afternoon as well with 27-31+. Now, all bets are off if the atmosphere destabilizes enough for thunderstorms. If you like to play it safe, get the early afternoon mid 20’s session.

Deep clouds move in Sunday and stay all day. Westerlies start at 12-15 in the west and drop to 8-11 in the afternoon. East of the low clouds, wherever that ends up being, we’ll have 25-29 all day long, all the way to Roosevelt. Westerlies back off on Monday, possibly all the way to the light-and-variable zone, possibly not.

Road and Mountain Biking

Looks like we have a pretty good chance of some intermittent rain showers over the next five days. Fingers crossed for brown pow! Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest. Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through September 13th. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

Community events today start with the 7am Kickstand Coffee run. It’s four miles, and earns you a cup of coffee and a donut. First Friday happens this evening in downtown Hood River, and the White Salmon Library has a talk on wild mushrooms, just in time for the earliest mushroom seasons in years. Foragers will also appreciate the Huckleberry Festival going on all weekend in Bingen.

You can celebrate our farmers tomorrow afternoon at the Harvest Celebration at Freebridge Brewing in The Dalles. WAAAM’s fly-in is this weekend, and the Hood River County Fairground has the Toyo Tires Trailpass, an overland vehicle expo. For something mellower, try the work party at Pacific Hermitage Saturday: potluck 10:30, working 1-3pm, tea with monks 3-4.
